Donald and Melania Trump Share an Air Kiss on Inaugural Stage Before His Swearing-In

The president and the first lady acknowledged one another on the stage at the rotunda, but the wide brim of Melania's hat seemingly made any physical contact impossible

Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump had a near-miss of a kiss ahead of his swearing-in as the 47th president on Monday, Jan. 20.

After Trump was introduced at his inauguration ceremony in the U.S. Capitol rotunda, he greeted his wife with a kiss. However, seemingly due to the wide brim of her hat, he wasn’t able to make contact with her cheek. In a video shared to social media, the moment resulted in an air kiss.

Trump retained a smile after the interaction and continued his walk across the inaugural dais.

Last week, the 54-year-old first lady gave a vague glimpse as to where she will reside in her husband's second term.

In an interview with Fox News that aired on Fox & Friends on Monday, Jan. 13, Melania said she will be splitting her time between Washington, D.C., New York City and Palm Beach, Fla., over the next four years due to her various responsibilities — though she plans to make one of the homes her main residence.

When asked where she will spend the most time in her new title, Melania told Fox, "I will be in the White House. And when I need to be in New York, I will be in New York. When I need to be in Palm Beach, I will be in Palm Beach. My first priority is to be a mom, to be a first lady, to be a wife."

In November 2024, an insider told PEOPLE that there was doubt as to whether Melania wanted to live in the White House full-time when Donald assumed the presidency.

"If Melania becomes first lady again, of course people expect her to move into the White House and perform appropriate duties," a social source close to the Trumps said, adding that she was not so keen on relocating to the official residence.

The insider added that she is “not likely” to make the White House her permanent residence.

"She will have her private living apartment there, and she has her home in New York, and her home at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach," the source said. "She will spend time in all of these places."
