Don McLean Voices Uncertainty About Taylor Swift After Eras Tour Success
While Taylor Swift relaxes after finishing up her record-breaking Eras Tour, many fans are excitedly waiting for her next move. But fellow singer-songwriter Don McLean isn't certain Swift can live up to her past "excellence."
The "American Pie" singer spoke with People at the 32nd Annual Movieguide Awards on Feb. 7, when he started talking about the 35-year-old Grammy winner.
He noted that he didn't get to attend the Eras Tour himself, but he was aware of the show and the artistry involved, saying, "I mean, she does more for one song than I do for the whole night...I can't [understand] how she does it.”
But McLean painted the picture of the Eras Tour's huge success as a double-edged sword, noting that it sets a precedence for both other artists and Swift herself in the future, saying, "But that's the level of excellence that's now required of all these young ladies and men who go out there, and that's a high level."
“I don't know if even she can do it again," he declared.
McLean has praised Swift in the past, mentioning her in an interview last summer as he said, "She is a person who is an example of what talent and really hard work can accomplish...Taylor Swift was a star for 15 years before she became a monster star, the size of the galaxy for god sake."
Similar to his new comments, McLean said at the time, "She does everything that she does better than everybody else," before explaining that the most important thing for Swift should be "that she stays happy."
Swift's Eras Tour started in March 2023, and after touring around the world with sold-out shows, it finally came to an end in December 2024.
