Yahoo Lifestyle Is 'Doctor Who' Coming Back in 2025? The Showrunner Gave the Best Clue

In December 2023, fans of Doctor Who got to experience the show celebrating an incredible 60 years on TV with three very special episodes.
At the time of the installments airing, a lot happened for Whovians in the Doctor Who universe. Viewers got to see David Tennant return to the show and become the first actor to play multiple versions of the Time Lord (he played the Tenth Doctor from 2005-2010 and the Fourteenth Doctor for three episodes between 2022 and 2023). Folks were also introduced to actor Ncuti Gatwa, who became the Fifteenth Doctor as the result of bi-generation and the character splitting into two different bodies. This development was a break in Doctor Who lore, and it ushered in a brand-new era for fans worldwide.
Well, after a season full of adventures for the Doctor and his new companion Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson), fans get to see the beloved character back in action for the 2024 Doctor Who Christmas Special. Titled "Joy to the World" and airing on Christmas Day, folks watched the Doctor help out a young woman named Joy (portrayed by Bridgerton actress Nicola Coughlan) as she encountered danger while trying to enjoy a quiet stay at a London hotel. This kicked off a new installment for the Fifteenth Doctor, and it also had us asking a very important question. Is Doctor Who returning with new episodes in 2025?
Fans will be elated to learn that new Doctor Who episodes will likely return in 2025. What's more, the series showrunner Russell T. Davies even gave a potential timeline for when folks can see them air on TV.
When Russell appeared on BBC's The One Show in December 2024, he was asked about what fans can expect from the upcoming season of Doctor Who. And while he couldn't give away all the details, he did share that viewers are going to have a whole mix of emotions throughout.
"It's coming, it's sensational," he stated in a clip posted on X (formerly Twitter). "There's a lot of scares, there's a planet in the far future that's absolutely terrifying. There's a trip to Miami... it's very, very, very good and it's coming sooner than you think."
What's more, Russell may have already alluded to an exact timeframe of when the new season of Doctor Who may air on television. When he spoke to Radio Times for its "Big Issue" back in November 2023, he seemingly implied that episodes will start airing beginning in May 2025.
"If I sound a bit hyper, it's because I just this morning delivered a Doctor Who script that will be on air in May 2025," he said at the time.
Given how the last season of Doctor Who aired back in May 2024, this pattern would absolutely track if new episodes started premiering in the spring of 2025. And while it's still a while before we get to actually see what the Doctor and Ruby are up to, at least we have the Christmas special as a preview of what's to come!
