Did Whole Foods Change Their Beloved Berry Chantilly Cake Recipe?
Whole Foods tried to change its Berry Chantilly cake recipe — until outrage from fans caused them to rethink the decision
A change to a fan-favorite Whole Foods cake was short but not too sweet.
The grocery store’s Berry Chantilly cake has been available since 2002 and gained a cult-like following in recent years. But a recipe switch in September threatened to leave Chantilly lovers with a bad taste.
TikTokers noticed that the cake had been changed and videos quickly went viral. Lisa Younes video from Sept. 21, which has since been viewed over 1.5 million times, claimed that the original Berry Chantilly cake slices were being discontinued after speaking to a Whole Foods employee. (She said the full Berry Chantilly cakes would stick to the original recipe.)
Other creators tested out the rumors and found them to be true. Rather than the $5 two layers of vanilla cake with berries and almond-mascarpone cream frosting, the individual cake slices were swapped with a frozen cake and frosting and jam filling in place of the fresh fruit.
Testers claimed that the jam tasted "like raspberry jam-flavored cleaning product,” according to one TikTok from @culturework. Berries were also strewn on the side instead of in between the frosting and cake layers.
Fans rushed to Whole Foods' social media pages, demanding information about the sliced cake. Initially, the grocery store reiterated in comments that the cake has not been discontinued and that the full-sized cake remained “unchanged.”
“Berry Chantilly cake slices have not been discontinued! While the slices may look different, they maintain the signature almond flavor and fluffy texture that you know and love from our classic cake,” one comment from Whole Foods read.
A spokesperson from Whole Foods told The New York Times on Sept. 26 that the company had “aligned the flavor profile, size, packaging and price” to standardize the cake slices sold in stores so customers would “have the same high-quality experience” at all stores.
But after a week of berating the national retailers, Berry Chantilly loyalists forced Whole Foods to listen to their requests. The company addressed the recipe reversal in the comments section of a TikTok on Oct. 1.
“The single slices are anticipated to go back to the way they were by the end of week. 😊” read one comment. Another Whole Foods comment said, “Hi, our Berry Chantilly Cake is unchanged. Due to feedback, we’re bringing back single slices of the classic Chantilly Cake customers know and love!”
On Sept. 30, the spokesperson updated The New York Times: “Based on feedback from our customers, we will reintroduce single slices of the Berry Chantilly cake that are the same as the classic our customers know and love.”
