“Dexter: Original Sin”'s“ ”Dark Teaser Promises a Look at the Makings of an Iconic Killer
The highly-anticipated prequel series stars Patrick Gibson, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Patrick Dempsey
Dexter is ready once again to have a bloody good time.
The prolific serial killer returns to the small screen with Dexter: Original Sin, premiering on Paramount+ with Showtime on Friday, Dec. 13. This prequel series, starring Patrick Gibson as Dexter Morgan, will follow the iconic character as he “transitions from student to avenging serial killer.”
“When his bloodthirsty urges can’t be ignored any longer, Dexter must learn to channel his inner darkness,” according to the synopsis. “With the guidance of his father, Harry (Christian Slater), he adopts a Code designed to help him find and kill people who deserve to be eliminated from society without getting on law enforcement’s radar. This is a particular challenge for young Dexter as he begins a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department.”
In the first teaser for the crime drama, Gibson emerges from an elevator as narrator Michael C. Hall declares via voiceover, “I am a killer.” Hall played Dexter in the original Showtime series.

“But I wasn’t born this way,” he continues, as the teaser briefly cuts to CSI chief Tanya Martin (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Harry. “I was made by my history and the people around me.”
As bass-heavy club music thumps urgently in the background, the clip shows more of its star-studded cast, including Christina Milian and Patrick Dempsey, while weaving in snippets of a high school brawl.
“They say it takes a village to raise a killer,” Hall adds, as Dexter wields a grooved knife.
The teaser wraps with the camera affixed on Dexter — a dark expression crossing his face — before cutting to the show’s blood-colored title onscreen.
In addition to Gibson, Gellar, Slater, Dempsey and Milian, Molly Brown, Debra Morgan, James Martinez, Alex Shimizu and Reno Wilson round out the cast. Dexter showrunner Clyde Phillips also returns to helm the prequel series.
The casting of Gellar, Slater and Dempsey, in particular, was a deliberate decision by network execs to help "capture" the 1990s period the show is set in, PEOPLE previously reported in June. To achieve this, they chose actors who had appeared in notable 1990s projects and who continue to be stars today.
Dexter: Original Sin follows the eight-season run of Dexter, starring Hall and Jennifer Carpenter, which ran from 2006 to 2013, and spawned the miniseries Dexter: New Blood.
The original series won four Emmy Awards, including outstanding directing for a drama series in 2010 and outstanding guest actor in a drama series in 2010 for John Lithgow’s portrayal as Arthur Mitchell. Hall also received a Golden Globe in 2010 for best performance by an actor in a TV drama.
