David Lynch Was Working on a Netflix Series ‘Filled With Mystery and Risks’ Before His Death, Ted Sarandos Says
Sadly, we never got to see David Lynch’s final project make it to television.
The celebrated auteur, who died Thursday at the age of 78, was working on a limited series for Netflix in the years preceding his death, the streamer’s CEO Ted Sarandos revealed in a Instagram tribute to Lynch. Years after they first met, Lynch “came into Netflix to pitch a limited series which we jumped at,” Sarandos explained. “It was a David Lynch production, so filled with mystery and risks but we wanted to go on this creative ride with this genius.”

But several obstacles got in the way: “First Covid, then some health uncertainties lead to this project never being produced but we made it clear that as soon as he was able, we were all in.” Calling Lynch “an unapologetic genius” whose “body of work is remarkable, visionary, bold and artful,” Sarandos added that “I will always wonder about what he had in mind for us with what would have been his last project.”
Lynch, whose singular work included the ABC cult classic Twin Peaks and films like Blue Velvet, received a flurry of tributes from his friends and admirers across showbiz, including Kyle MacLachlan, who starred in both Twin Peaks and Blue Velvet for Lynch. “I will miss him more than the limits of my language can tell and my heart can bear,” MacLachlan said. “My world is that much fuller because I knew him and that much emptier now that he’s gone. David, I remain forever changed, and forever your Kale. Thank you for everything.”
