Daniel Day-Lewis Returning To Big Screen In Focus Features’ ‘Anemone’ From Ronan Day-Lewis

UPDATE: Daniel Day-Lewis is in fact returning to acting in Focus Features and Plan B’s Anemone from Ronan Day-Lewis.

The feature is from first time director Ronan Day-Lewis, the son of the 3x Oscar winning actor. Father and son wrote the screenplay which explores the intricate relationships between fathers, sons and brothers and the dynamics of familial bonds. The last time Day-Lewis was on the big screen was Focus Features’ Paul Thomas Anderson movie Phantom Thread in 2017.

PREVIOUS 8:14AM: Is the great Daniel Day-Lewis making a return to acting?

The three-time Oscar winner has seemingly been papped by the UK’s Daily Mail on the set of a new UK movie also featuring Sean Bean.

The tabloid says the under-the-radar project is called Avelyne though there’s no sign of the movie online. Day-Lewis, sporting a handle bar moustache, can be seen riding a motorbike with Bean during what the Mail says is the shooting of a scene. The Mail says filming is taking place in Manchester and that a busy crew were in attendance for what they describe as an “action-packed scene”.

Most likely this is a cameo or a favour for a friend rather than a full-blown return. Reps for Bean and former reps of Day-Lewis weren’t available for comment.

Day-Lewis sensationally quit acting in 2017. In a message via publicist Leslee Dart he said at the time: “Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor. He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years. This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject.”

Day-Lewis won the Best Actor Academy Award for Lincoln (2012), There Will Be Blood (2007) and My Left Foot (1990). He also was nominated for Phantom Thread (2017), Gangs Of New York (2002) and In the Name Of The Father (1993). His career stretches to the early 1980s and also includes lead roles in Nine (2009), The Ballad Of Jack And Rose (2005), The Crucible (1996) and The Last Of The Mohicans (1992).

The actor has always kept a low profile and eschewed the limelight. In a rare public appearance, he took part in an event for Martin Scorsese’s Killers Of The Flower Moon in January of this year. The filmmaker joked that he hoped to coax the actor out of retirement to make one more film.
