Cynthia Erivo Schooled Dax Shepard After He Asked An "Annoying" TMI Question About "Wiping" With Long Nails

Dax Shepard recently hosted Cynthia Erivo on his podcast Armchair Expert, where they chatted about all things Wicked ahead of its release later this week.

However, one of Dax’s questions for the Broadway and West End star veered toward a little…gross.

The awkward moment came about as the pair began discussing Cynthia’s iconic fashion sense.

In case you’ve missed it, Cynthia has been paying homage to her Wicked character, Elphaba, throughout the film’s press tour by wearing daring black outfits at the global premieres. She has also been sporting gorgeous decorative manicures — seemingly a tribute to Elphaba’s long nails.

After mentioning Elphaba’s long nails, Dax asked if he could bring up “a really crazy question that’s inappropriate.” He began, “When you’re wiping your butt…” Before he could finish, Cynthia interjected with, “I knew you were gonna say that.”

“No one’s afraid to ask it,” Cynthia explained. “Everybody asks that question. And my answer is nobody uses just their fingers to wipe their backside. You use tissue, correct? And you wipe.”

Dax continued to query, and then began with, “What I would do if I were you…” to which his co-host Monica Padman responded with “Oh boy.” Cynthia shut down Dax’s suggestion of making a toilet paper “mitten” with a simple, “I fold.”

Dax asked Cynthia if she was “offended” by his question, and the star responded with light exasperation. “I get it,” she said. “I’m annoyed by it, I’m like, come on, guys.”

Cynthia has previously mentioned that Elphaba’s long nails are instrumental in her portrayal of the iconic character. In an interview with PopSugar, she said, “I knew I wanted [Elphaba] to have micro braids and I wanted her to have a full set [of nails] for two reasons: [They are] a nod to my culture and a nod to the world of Oz.”

“I imagined that her nails were a part of her magic that they just grew out of her and she hadn’t yet discovered why, like her green skin,” she said to PopSugar, hinting at a future plot point for the second installment of Wicked coming next year.
