‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Producer Janice Chua Joins Third Culture Content, U.S. Adaptation of Korean Hit ‘King the Land’ in Works (EXCLUSIVE)

“Crazy Rich Asians” producer Janice Chua has boarded global production company Third Culture Content (TCC) as co-founder and producer, as the banner simultaneously reveals development on a U.S. adaptation of Korean drama hit “King the Land.”

The Los Angeles and Seoul-based outfit, which produced the English-Korean bilingual series “Dramaworld” that bowed on Netflix globally before its second season hit Prime Video (U.S.), ITV (U.K.), CBC (Canada), iQiyi (Southeast Asia), Tving (Korea), and U-Next (Japan), is plotting an ambitious growth strategy for 2025.

Chua joins TCC following her stint as VP of international development and production at Imagine Entertainment, where she spearheaded local-language content initiatives. While at Imagine, she exec produced Disney’s “Taiwan Crime Stories,” which scored twelve Golden Bell Award nominations and two nods at Busan’s Asia Contents Awards and Global OTT Awards in 2023.

The company’s “King the Land” adaptation will reimagine SLL’s workplace romance that spent eight consecutive weeks on Netflix’s Global Top Ten list for Non-English TV in 2023. The Korean original follows the heir of a luxury hotel conglomerate who finds an unexpected ally in a staff member during an inheritance battle.

The executive previously served as VP of development and production for Asia at Ivanhoe Pictures. Her producer credits include the 2018 box office juggernaut “Crazy Rich Asians.” Earlier in her career, she oversaw international business and co-productions as director of international at Beijing Galloping Horse, including international sales for John Woo’s historical epic “The Crossing.”

Earlier this month, Dulake and Chua were named faculty leads for CAPCA (Canada-Asia Pacific Co-Production Accelerator), backed by Canadian government agency RESO (Racial Equity Screen Office) and SLL. The program aims to provide resources and connections for Canadian writers and producers developing TV projects for North American markets.

TCC boasts a diverse development slate featuring collaborations with creatives from the U.S., Canada, South Korea, India, Japan, Thailand, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, and the Philippines. The company secured seed investment in 2021 from strategic partners including YouTube co-founder Steve Chen, Strong Ventures, and Yintai Investment Company.
