A Comprehensive Guide to the Hemsworth Brothers

A Comprehensive Guide to the Hemsworth Brothers

If you thought it was already impossible to choose a favorite Hollywood Chris (I mean, we truly adore all of them), imagine choosing a favorite Hemsworth brother—although, kudos to Chris Hemsworth for being smack dab in the middle of the Venn diagram lol.

Yep, Luke, 43; Chris, 40; and Liam, 34; are all truly up there in terms of the three H's: Hollywood status, humility, and hotness. What?!?! We don't make the rules! So without further ado, here's everything you need to know about the actors, from what their childhood was like to their relationship statuses, the latter of which will make you 😭.

Let's get into it, shall we?

They spent their childhood in Australia

The trio was raised throughout the country in Melbourne, the Outback, and on Phillip Island by their mother, Leonie, and their father, Craig. And in case you were curious for more deets, middle sib Chris has previously discussed his early years during a convo with SilverKris in June 2019.

“I grew up around buffaloes and crocodiles, not phones and video games,” he recalled. “Growing up in the Australian outback, I had adventures and spent most of my time outside—it shaped me and I am very proud of that.”

Liam once threw a knife at Chris

Yah, you read that right. 👀 Turns out, the Hunger Games star's fights with his brothers back when they were young were kinda like...well, like the Hunger Games IRL. According to Liam, all three brothers had brawls that were “pretty bad,” but the ones between him and Chris in particular were even worse.

“We would have a fist fight about who was going to sit in the front seat of the car,” he noted during a convo with Conan O'Brien back in 2012. “I threw a knife, like a proper—I don't know why my grandpa thought it was a good idea to give little kids a proper throwing knife, but he gave it to us...I threw it at [Chris’s] head when I was about 8 and the handle hit him in the head.”

Liam also noted that their mother once broke her finger when she tried to end one of his and the Thor actor's fights, which wound up being “a low point” for the brothers.

But just when you thought the knife story was bad...enter Luke and Liam's rifle incident.

Liam confessed the following to Jimmy Fallon in November 2013 (via The Wrap): “My brother Luke, my oldest brother, came up to me with an air rifle and he said, ‘Run.’” The celeb then compared getting hit with a lead pellet to the moment Willem Dafoe dies in Platoon. “That was the first bit of acting I ever did. Except it was real—it was method.”

Idk about you, but this truly makes fights with my siblings look like a walk in the park lol.

Their career origin story is kind of iconic

Because all three brothers are mega-famous celebs, it's kind of hard to imagine how their careers began. Well, dear reader, it all started in 2001 when Luke booked a role on the Australian soap opera Neighbours—a highly popular drama series where his brothers would ultimately join him as cast members.

Chris and Liam then seized the moment to further their careers by landing a buncha roles in hugely successful shows. Chris, for his part, booked the role of Thor in May 2009 and has since gone on to star in a number of Marvel films tied to the character. Liam, meanwhile, was cast in the Oscar-robbed masterpiece The Last Song and The Hunger Games, among a ton of other projects.

As for the eldest Hemsworth? Despite being the first to dabble in the world of entertainment, he wound up earning a leading role in the HBO sci-fi series Westworld waaaaay later in 2016, which brings us to the fact that...

Luke was the last one to join the acting bandwagon full-time

Yep, and during a 2016 interview with Entertainment Tonight, the celeb shared that for a number of years, while his brothers fully pursued acting, he started a flooring business!

“I wanted to have something that could provide money while still allowing time for auditions,” he recalled during the convo. “So, I learned the flooring business, started my own, and in that time, got married and had a couple of kids.”

However, when Chris landed the role of Thor, Luke actually felt inspired to completely dive head-first into acting again and moved to Los Angeles. First, however, he had to save up to make the big move with his family, which is why Chris wound up hiring Luke as his personal trainer—an opportunity that allowed him to save up $$$$ for the huge career switch.

Luckily, things ended up working out for the actor, who landed the role of Ashley Stubbs in the dystopian series Westworld from 2016 to 2022.

Liam was almost Thor!

'Kay, the vibe of this story can best be described as 🌀🌀🌀. In a June 2022 episode of Wired's “Autocomplete Interview,” Chris opened up about the story of him not getting a callback for the Marvel project at first, and recalled, “I think my audition sucked. I think that was the response I got.”

Then, Liam apparently took a stab at the audition and got “very close” to landing the part...like, he was legit down to the “last five people” being considered.

“They were like, 'Look, he's great, but he's a bit young.' My manager then said, 'Well, he does have an older brother,' which was me,” Chris added before confessing, “I came back in, re-auditioned a few times and just had a different attitude. Maybe I had a little more sort of motivation that my little brother got a look in and I hadn't. I also had done a couple of films in between those two auditions, so I had a bit more experience and confidence in what I was going to do.” I-con-ic!!!

Chris and Luke are both married

And, yes, we're truly obsessed with both of their 'ships! Chris married Spanish model and actor Elsa Pataky in December 2010 after a few months of knowing each other (when you know, you know, people!!!), and the two share three kids together: daughter India Rose and twin sons Tristan and Sasha.

In 2015, the couple left Hollywood and moved to Australia for a more ~chill~ life. “When you're suffocated by the work, every conversation that you're having and every billboard you're seeing is to do with a movie or whatever around the industry, you lose perspective,” Chris revealed to The Daily Telegraph about the decision.

“There’s not a single person that I interact with, or close friends of mine, that are really in the industry and so that’s hugely refreshing. It’s great for my kids and my wife,” he added about his life now.

Luke, for his part, married his wife Samantha Hemsworth in 2007, and the two also share three children: daughters Holly, Ella, and Harper.

In 2020, five years after his brother's move, Luke and his own family relocated to Australia. “We moved late December so the kids could start school here in January. They are loving it—we are all loving it. It's good to be back,” he confessed to the Sydney Morning Herald. “ The quality of life back home is unparalleled. You just don't get that over there.”

As for Liam? After his divorce from Miley Cyrus in December 2019 (*sigh* we're still not over it), the actor began dating model Gabriella Brooks, who btw is a fellow Australian! For all the deets on them, head right on over this way:

They made an appearance on Saturday Night Live together

And it was truly *chef's kiss* at that! In March 2015, Chris was the host of the popular show and invited his brothers on stage during his monologue, where they all hugged before their “fourth brother,” aka “Callum” aka Kenan Thompson in a blonde wig, joined in.

FYI, “Callum” told the audience that he, too, was an actor and that he'd made a name for himself posting instructional videos about addressing snakes in the workplace. Truly obsessed with this lore!

Anyway!!! That's everything we know about all the Hemsworth brothers, but definitely make sure to check back in for any more intel on 'em!
