Colin Jost reacts to college “Weakest Link ”appearance, reveals he spent prize money on 'beer and wine'
"I wouldn’t say that I did great on the show.”
Colin Jost is looking back at the time he was a contestant on a college episode of the Weakest Link.
The Saturday Night Live star, 42, opened up about his 2002 appearance on the popular game show during Monday’s episode of The Tonight Show, revealing that he ended up spending the entirety of his prize money from the show on one big party for himself and the rest of his fellow collegiate contestants.
“I was extremely nervous,” Jost explained to host Jimmy Fallon of his performance on the game show. “It was in Los Angeles — I had never been to Los Angeles before. I’d never been on any sort of show and I was there and… I wouldn’t say that I did great on the show.”

As if to prove his point, Fallon surprised Jost with footage from the episode, which saw a young, Harvard sweatshirt-sporting Jost flub a question about which season August was in. The camera then cuts back to Jost in the studio with his head in his hands.
“‘What season is August in?’ And I said, ‘Fall,’” he commiserated. “I, by the way, thought about it, then said, ‘Fall.’" He added, "So much more humiliating when you’re wearing a Harvard sweatshirt.”
Jost went on to reveal that he got the opportunity to appear on Weakest Link after receiving a random phone call one day. “They were like, ‘Hey, do you want to be on a game show?’ I was like, ‘Sure!’ And I can’t believe this wasn’t a scam,” he said. “They gave me a trivia quiz over the thing and they were like, ‘We’re gonna fly you to L.A.’ Like, this wasn’t a kidnapping. I cannot believe it.”
The Pop Culture Jeopardy host admitted he struggled pretty hard for his first few rounds.
“That game show had a voiceover every round, and every single round, it was, ‘Statistically, the weakest link this round was Colin,’ Every single round,” he recalled. “And then I managed to get in, survive 'til the end, and then I ran the table at the end. But I had been so bad at the game that there was almost no money to win because I had gotten it all wrong. So I won like $5,000, which at the time was great. The person after me won $60,000."
So, naturally, Jost decided to take his prize money and throw one big bash for all of the contestants staying at the same hotel. “I just used all the money and we bought like, beer and wine, and went in a giant 20-person hot tub,” he said. “And that was basically the money.”
“Yeah, college kid, that’s what you do!” Fallon remarked, to which Jost replied, “That’s what you do! It was a college episode!”
Jost has since tried to redeem his rough Weakest Link appearance, playing a round of the trivia game with Ellen DeGeneres on her talk show in 2020. However, he still ended up losing after he incorrectly guessed the number of teaspoons in a tablespoon.
