Betty Gilpin's playing the role now. Tituss Burgess is set to take it on in March. But on Tuesday, April 8, playwright and original star Cole Escola will be back on the boards in the title role of ‘Mary Todd Lincoln," the center of the hit Broadway comedy, Oh, Mary!

News of Escola's return was announced on Tuesday, Feb. 25. It'll be a homecoming for original cast members Conrad Ricamora (‘Mary’s Husband’) and James Scully (‘Mary’s Teacher’) too, the pair reprising their roles in the production beginning that day as well.

That will reunite the entire original Broadway cast. Bianca Leigh ('Mary’s Chaperone') and Tony Macht ('Mary’s Husband’s Assistant') have remained in the absurdist comedy since it premiered at the Lyceum Theatre in New York City in June 2024.

It's perfect timing, too. Experts predict the must-see play — which has been a critical and audience smash thanks to its nonstop laughs and hilarious performances — will be a big player at June's 2025 Tony Awards. Its Off-Broadway run last February earned Escola, 38, a slew of trophies, including the Obie, Drama Desk, Theatre World, and Outer Critics Circle awards.

Nominations for the Tonys, theater's highest honor at the "T" in EGOT, will be announced on May 1.

Oh, Mary! follows the miserable, suffocated Mary Todd Lincoln in the weeks leading up to Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. The play is directed by Sam Pinkleton.

No matter what happens at the Tonys, the play has already founds its way into the record books. In the 121-year history of the Lyceum Theatre, Oh, Mary! is the first show to gross more than $1 million in a single week, and has since broken its own box-office record 11 times.

Audiences have kept it a hot ticket, too. According to data provided by the Broadway League, in its 31 weeks on Broadway so far, Oh, Mary! has played to full capacity for 27 — a rare fete for a play, and even more for a new title that's not a long-running hit like WickedThe Lion King or Hamilton.

Tickets for Oh, Mary! are now on sale.
