Coldplay's Chris Martin falls through stage trapdoor while in concert: 'That was nearly a YouTube moment'

The frontman was caught by a crew member and went on with the show in Melbourne, Australia.

Chris Martin was onstage doing a little crowd work during a Coldplay show at Melbourne's Marvel Stadium when he fell into a trapdoor.

Martin was reading some signs in the audience when he backed up, unknowingly, into a trap door, falling into the awaiting arms of a crew member.

"That's, uh, not planned," Martin told the gasping crowd, before addressing his savior, "Thank you for catching me."

He added, "Holy s---, that was nearly a YouTube moment." Though maybe not a YouTube moment, video of the fall was captured by a fan and posted to X (formerly Twitter).

Reps for Martin did not immediately respond to Entertainment Weekly's request for comment.

Martin and Coldplay are in the tail end of their massive Music of the Spheres World Tour, which kicked off in 2022 and will end at London's Wembley Stadium next September. With 9.6 million tickets sold across 164 dates, with a global revenue of nearly $1.1 billion, it is ranked as the most attended world tour and the second highest grossing tour ever, behind Taylor Swift's The Eras Tour.

Over the summer, Martin invited Michael J. Fox to play onstage with the band in a surprise appearance at Glastonbury. Fox, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1991, was in a wheelchair when he joined the band on stage with a guitar, jamming along with them for the final two songs of their set, “Humankind” and “Fix You.”

Following the performance, Martin thanked the cheering audience before giving Fox a special shout-out. "Especially, thank you," he said. "The main reason why we’re in a band is because of watching Back to the Future. So thank you to our hero forever, and one of the most amazing people around, Mr. Michael J. Fox.”

Meanwhile, Martin is only the latest musician to take a tumble on, off, and around a stage. Entertainment vet Madonna got into a tumbling groove in February while performing in Seattle. Nelly Furtado wasn't like a bird at all when she fell during her set at Coachella. Jesus took the heel of Carrie Underwood when she fell onstage during the Carolina Country Music Fest.

And just last month, Olivia Rodrigo showed her guts when she rebounded from a fall during a concert also in Melbourne. “Oh my God! That was fun,” she said, climbing out of her hole. “I'm okay!”

She added, jokingly, “Sometimes, there is just a hole in the stage. Okay, where was I? How are you doing tonight, Melbourne?”
