Twihard Christina Perri did not expect her Twilight ballad "A Thousand Years" to live on for years—much like the Cullens themselves.

Appearing on SiriusXM's The Nikki & Brie Show on Friday, the singer-songwriter recalled the origins of the popular 2011 track, including how she initially crafted it for Edward (Robert Pattinson) and Bella's (Kristen Stewart) wedding scene in that year's The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 before it was instead placed at the end credits.

"This is just such a special story for me," said Perri. "I really was a Twilight fan. I was more of a Twihard. I was like hardcore Twilight fan . . . [Production said], 'We need a song for the wedding scene,' and I was like, 'Okay, great.' And then the song got chosen, but not for the wedding. They were like, 'We're actually gonna put it in the credits.' And I was like, 'Cool, this is still the coolest thing that's ever happened to me ever because it's my favorite books, my favorite movies.'"

Recalling how the song was given radio play to promote the film, "I was like, 'Wow, that's really cool,'" said Perri. "And then all of a sudden, the fans just loved it the most. And then because of that, the filmmakers were like, 'Let's put a seven-minute version of ‘A Thousand Years’ in the last film.' So I did this orchestral version of it and then a duet at the time with my boyfriend. And it was like this new version, and I thought maybe that was it."

When fellow Twihards began to get married, they all chose the track as their wedding song. "All of a sudden this song is not so much about Twilight anymore," marveled Perri. "It's this song that everybody's walking down the aisle to, everybody's doing their first dance to. . . So this song just keeps living its own life and evolving. For the next 10 years, everybody gets married to it and everybody starts having babies."

Perri also got married and had her own children, giving a whole new meaning to the enduring ballad. "When you become a mom, your whole world changes," said the singer, who shares two children with her husband of eight years, Paul Costabile.

Adapted from Stephenie Meyer's novels of the same name, Twilight told the love story of teenager Bella Swan and vampire Edward Cullen, which propelled the then-unknown young stars to global fame. A box-office hit, the five-film franchise collectively grossed over $3 billion worldwide and also starred Taylor Lautner, Ashley Greene, Anna Kendrick, Billy Burke, Peter Facinelli, and Elizabeth Reaser.

The hit franchise became notable for its well-curated soundtracks, with Paramore ("Decode"), Death Cab for Cutie ("Meet Me at the Equinox"), and Lykke Li ("Possibility") being among the artists who've contributed to the films.
