Christina Milian had Jason Dean on her mind when she walked on set of the Dexter prequel.

The actress, 43, stars alongside Christian Slater, Patrick Dempsey and Sarah Michelle Gellar in Dexter: Original Sin, and she tells PEOPLE that she had a hard time not thinking about the Heathers poster she had on her wall as a teenager when she was on set.

"My first scene I ever did was with Christian! And I'm — [there's] this voice in the back [of my head] — my Michael C. Hall was telling me a whole other story while I'm doing the scene," she says, referring to the Dexter star's inner monologue, which narrates the original 2006 series and the prequel, too. "Like, 'You remember when you... put his poster on the wall? Remember that?'"

Calling Slater, 55, Dempsey, and Gellar, "legends" and "icons," Milian admits that, aside from her Heathers-related excitement, she had some major nerves working alongside the all-star cast.

"Yeah! Are you kidding me?" she says.

"It took me months to get over the nervous part," she admits. "And I was still having these friendly, fun, crazy moments with them from day one."

She decided to just be candid about the nerves, though, and tell her costars how "nervous" but "excited" she was. "That did relieve a little bit of the stress."

Milian wasn't the only one fangirling while on set of the prequel series. Gellar, who plays CSI chief at the Miami Metro Police Department Tanya Martin, told PEOPLE, "Heathers was — and Christian knows this — was my all-time favorite movie in, I think, the world."

Working with Dempsey wasn't too shabby either. "I can't lie, if you went back to high school Sarah and said that you'd be sitting in a car squished between Christian Slater and Pat Dempsey... I mean, forget about it," Gellar, 47, admitted. "Ronald Miller and JD? Forget it."

As for what Slater thinks of his costar's crush, he told PEOPLE, "She might've said that she had a crush on me at some point in her life. But God, I mean, I love her too. She's amazing."

He was excited, too, to reunite with Dempsey, 58, who he worked with "30 years ago" on the "funny gangster movie" Mobsters.

"It was wonderful to reconnect with him," Slater said. "It was really, really great."

"It is a zinger," he continued of the 1991 film they worked on together. "It's really something. We got our Tommy guns and it's a pretty funny movie. But it was wonderful to reconnect with him. It was really, really great."
