Chris Bailey, The Saints' legendary lead singer, dies aged 65

Chris Bailey, the lead singer of Australian rock band The Saints has died aged 65, a statement confirmed on social media on Monday morning.

"It is with great pain in our hearts that we have to inform you about the passing of Chris Bailey, singer and songwriter of The Saints, on April the 9th, 2022," the statement read.

"Chris lived a life of poetry and music and stranded on a Saturday night."

No cause of death has been released.

The Saints formed in Brisbane in 1973 and became the first 'punk' band outside of the US to release a record. The band would go on to enjoy much success, releasing 14 albums, with the most recent being released in 2012.

The band's contribution to Aussie music was recognised in 2001, when they were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame.

Tributes flow for Chris Bailey

Fans shared their heartbreak on the post, with one user writing, "Very sad news. His music has been on my turntable since I was a teenager and is now on my son’s. Playing Eternally Yours as I write this. My condolences to his family."

"Such sad news. An amazing songwriter and one one of the best rock n roll voices ever," a second said.

"Thank you Chris for the great songs and live shows many I was so thankful to see. The hours I have spent with your music and your albums especially All Fools Day which kept me out of the darkness so many times. Enjoy Paradise...," a third wrote.

"A lifelong influence and a friendly, warm person the handful of times our paths crossed. RIP," another added.

The ABC's Zan Rowe took to Twitter to write, "A giant in punk music’s history, and present. What a loss. RIP Chris."

Journalist Hugh Robertson fondly remembered Chris, writing on Twitter, "I got to interview Chris Bailey many years ago. I was a baby journo, he was A God, and he didn’t owe me any more than the 15 minutes I was allotted. But we chatted for hours, he played me some demos, and made me promise I would never become boring. He certainly never did."

"Sad to hear the passing of Chris Bailey. The Saints are a great love of mine. It was good times when they were putting music out. I'll play my battered LP of I'm Stranded today," another fan Tweeted.
