Chappell says she's in a "different era" as she ditches trademark makeup
As well as seeing Chappell Roan at the top of just about everyone's Spotify Wrapped this year, we're also used to seeing the singer in her trademark look. That being: a painted white face, glittery eye makeup and fiery red locks. But, taking to Instagram this weekend, the Good Luck, Babe! singer ditched all that and told fans she's in a "different era".
Sharing a series of selfies, Chappell poses without her signature makeup (although she does still sport winged liner and mascara in some of the snaps) and shows off her natural hair colour. The singer's hair and makeup isn't the only thing that feels pared back, as she looks super relaxed in her 'off-duty' clothes, a Liverpool F.C. top and a beanie hat.
"A different era… indeed," she captioned the post, which, if we admit, is pretty cryptic. Someone else agreed, commenting: "I actually hope to God [that] Chappell Roan never stops being cryptic." Nevertheless, the post quickly racked up over 1.5 million likes within hours of it being shared.
Elsewhere in the comments section, fans pointed out that the new look represents Chappell's Missouri roots. "Missouri girl representation… LOVE to see it," one person wrote, as another said: "Now, this is a girl from Missouri."
Others simply commented on how stunning Chappell looks — with or without her trademark get up. "I'll never get over how stunning you are," someone said, with another writing, "Way too cute." Meanwhile, some fans thought Chappell was unrecognisable: "If you told me this was a random girl and not Chappell I'd believe you."
Previously speaking about her signature beauty style, Chappell said during her 'Midwest Princess' tour this year that — through her 'clowncore facepaint' — she wants to highlight her experience of queerness growing up in a small American town.
"People in my hometown call gay people clowns," she explained to the crowd. "That's why I actually wear my white face… Like b**ch, I’ll show you a clown."
