CBS Orders Pilot for Immigrant Sitcom Starring Stand-Up Comic Zarna Garg, With Mindy Kaling as EP
Following the success of Bob Hearts Abishola, CBS is trotting the globe again with a new sitcom.
The Eye network has handed a pilot order to Zarna, a multi-cam comedy starring Indian immigrant and stand-up comic Zarna Garg, TVLine has learned. In it, Garg plays “a proud immigrant woman who’s been raising her American born kids on Indian values,” per the official synopsis. “But now that they’re getting older, it’s time for her to focus on her own American dream.”

Garg will serve as a writer and executive producer on the series, with Darlene Hunt (Call Me Kat, The Conners) as showrunner as well as writer and EP. Mindy Kaling will also serve as an EP on the series, along with Kevin Hart, who hosted a Peacock comedy competition, Lyft Comics, that Garg won in 2021.
Born and raised in India before immigrating to America, Garg began her stand-up comedy career in 2018, with appearances on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Today. Her first stand-up special, Zarna Garg: One in a Billion, debuted on Prime Video in 2023. She also hosts and produces a family podcast, The Zarna Garg Show.
The order follows a five-season run for Bob Hearts Abishola on CBS, which paired sitcom vet Billy Gardell with Nigerian actress Folake Olowofoyeku, who played an immigrant nurse who fell in love with an American patient. The comedy from executive producer Chuck Lorre wrapped up in May.
