Cate Blanchett divides opinion with 'ridiculous' red carpet look: 'Idiotic'
Cate Blanchett turned heads at the Venice International Film Festival on Thursday, after stepping out in an unusual piece of fashion.
The Australian actress was there to support her new film Tár, where she plays a classical music conductor and composer.
Wearing a black velvet corset paired with low-waisted pants, her look was finished off with multiple hand-painted flowers.
Some fans were confused by Cate’s outfit, with many saying the top looked 'itchy’.

“It’s a black, bell-bottomed onesie with a bunch of flowers stuffed into the bodice. Oh, and she looks ridiculous,” commented a fan.
“This looks idiotic. Pantsuit with flowers? Wtf?” wrote a second.
“Fabulous! It’s a jumpsuit with a window box — so creative and yet practical. She could play the role of a large vase in this. Inspired!” another fan quipped.
“Are you kidding? I could probably find this whole get-up at Walmart. Half price isle,” a fourth chimed in.
On the other hand, many fans praised the star for taking such a big fashion risk.
“This is a life goal outfit,” one person wrote, with another saying, “I absolutely love her and her style.”
“Cate Blanchett could wear a burlap sack and make it look good,” a second pointed out.
“And the Queen has served again,” added another.
“Cate Blanchett owns [the] Venice International Film Festival this year,” another declared.
The star received an overwhelming response from the audience at VIFF, and bowed during the six-minute standing ovation.
In a director’s statement released with the teaser trailer, director Todd Field shared that the script was written with Cate Blanchett in mind.
“Had she said no, the film would have never seen the light of day,” his statement said.
“The superhuman skill and verisimilitude of Cate was something truly astounding to behold. She raised all boats. The privilege of collaborating with an artist of this calibre is something impossible to adequately describe.”
