News of Underwood’s involvement in the ceremony sparked immediate backlash, prompting her to release a statement doubling down on her decision to perform. “I love our country and am honored to have been asked to sing at the inauguration and to be a small part of this historic event,” she said. “I am humbled to answer the call at a time when we must all come together in the spirit of unity and looking to the future.”
The public remained divided over Underwood’s stance, with the ladies of The View among her many critics. “I wouldn’t do it,” Joy Behar said. “I would not normalize him. … How do you love your country and support and normalize somebody who’s a convicted felon who really wants to destroy the country?”
Other noteworthy performers on Monday’s schedule include Lee Greenwood of “God Bless the U.S.A.” fame, mullet enthusiast Kid Rock, disco royalty The Village People, country singer Jason Aldean and group Rascal Flatts, and One Tree Hill theme song creator Gavin DeGraw.
