The Canned Crescent Roll Trick We Wish We'd Known About Sooner

Weekdays are all about quick and easy breakfasts. Maybe it's a bowl of cereal, some yogurt with fruit and granola or a quick scrambled egg, if we have time. Weekend breakfasts are a different story, though.

On the weekend, we have a little more time to get our breakfast act together and with the holidays on the horizon, celebratory breakfasts and brunches are in our future. Just in time for that, one of our favorite food creators, Courtney LaCorte (aka @cheesegal) shared "Bill's Breakfast Casserole," a recipe from her father-in-law. Once we saw her making it we knew it was going to be a hit at our house, especially because it calls for one of our favorite shortcuts: a can of crescent rolls. Here's what you need to know.

LaCorte lists the detailed recipe in her Instagram caption, but the general idea here is a giant breakfast-themed calzone. She scrambles some eggs (a dozen to be exact!) and browns some sausage. She stirs cream cheese into the sausage, then folds in the scrambled eggs.

Once the filling is made, it's time to assemble, which is the moment when our minds were blown. LaCorte unrolls one can of crescent roll dough and presses it into a 9-by-13-inch pan, then spreads the sausage mixture on top. Some shredded cheese goes on top of that (because of course), then another call of crescent roll dough. Careful viewers will notice that LaCourte is using the Pillsbury crescent roll sheets vs. the variety that has the crescent roll triangle stamped in the dough. Both varieties will work, but the sheets are the better bet for this recipe.

Once everything is together, the whole thing goes into the oven at 375°F for about 25 minutes. You'll want to bake it until the crescent roll dough is golden brown.

In a surprise to nobody, the commenters were enthusiastic about this dish. "Literally just made this a few days ago as it’s also become my best friend's fave! Always a crowd-pleaser! And reheats so well!" said one commenter.

"I make this at church all the time! Ever since the first time you posted it! It's so good! Always completely gone!" someone else added. We can definitely see this being a crowd-favorite dish.

"My mom made this when I was a kid. One of my favorite comfort dishes," someone else said.

We love how easy it is and can also image all sorts of other combinations. You could skip the meat or use Soyrizo for a vegetarian version. You could incorporate peppers and onions for a Denver omelet-inspired vibe. We're also thinking chorizo and pepper jack and some chipotles or canned green chiles would be a great filling, too. We love a recipe that inspires us to get creative in the kitchen!
