Candice Bergen's Husband Marshall Rose Dies at 88 from Parkinson's Disease
The real estate developer and nonprofit advisor is survived by Candice Bergen, her daughter Chloe, his children and several grandchildren

Marshall Rose and Candice Bergen in 2015Candice Bergen’s husband Marshall Rose died on Saturday, Feb. 15. He was 88.
Rose died from complications with Parkinson's disease, according to a Feb. 17 New York Times obituary. The real estate developer and nonprofit advisor “died peacefully at home in the early hours of February 15, surrounded by loved ones.”
A rep for Bergen, 78, confirmed the news to PEOPLE, noting that Rose and the Murphy Brown star, who married in June 2000, were approaching their 25th wedding anniversary.
Rose "spent his life in New York," according to the obituary. Born in Brighton Beach in 1937, he earned an economics degree at City College and a law degree from New York University. His career included overseeing the development of Frank Gehry's IAC building, the renovation of Madison Square Garden and three city charter schools.

“Marshall's proudest contribution was his 30-year tenure on the board of the New York Public Library,” it continued. “In lieu of flowers, we would appreciate a donation to the New York Public Library, an institution he loved so dearly. Any gifts given in his honor (nypl.org/memorial) will be earmarked for adult literacy programs at branches across the five boroughs.”
Bergen was previously married to film director Louis Malle from 1980 until his death at age 63 from cancer in 1995. Up until 2020, the Oscar nominee and Rose spent their marriage in an East Hampton home first built for him and his first wife Jill, according to Architectural Digest.

In a 2015 Interview conversation with her Miss Congeniality costar Sandra Bullock, Bergen made it clear that her marriage came before work.
“I’m not that ambitious,” she said at the time. “I’m always grateful when I get offered something that engages me, it’s for the right amount of time, and I don’t have to leave my husband for more than a week or two. That’s really all I ask.”

The obituary also described Rose as "a doting dogfather to his beloved goldendoodle Jerry. ... His family carries on his legacy of fierce compassion, stubborn persistence, and commitment to cheering on the Knicks. His wisdom, strength and generosity of spirit will be remembered by the countless people whose lives he touched.”
Rose is survived by Bergen and her daughter Chloe, as well as his children Wendi and Andrew and several grandchildren.
