Brooke Shields reveals that a surgeon performed vaginal rejuvenation on her without her consent: 'Such an invasion'
In her new memoir, the actress opens up about her emotional reaction to the "irreversible" procedure.
Brooke Shields is opening up about her traumatic experience with a plastic surgeon, who performed an intimate procedure without asking her consent.
The Mother of the Bride actress is no stranger to being oversexualized and has long been candid about the treatment she endured after her years as a child star. But in her new memoir, Brooke Shields Is Not Allowed to Get Old: Thoughts on Aging as a Woman, the actress delves even deeper with distressing revelations, including the unwanted vaginal rejuvenation surgery performed on her in her 40s.
In a new Us Weekly cover story, Shields, 59, shared that the incident began when she paid a visit to her gynecologist, who inquired whether she had experienced discomfort over the size of her labia. When she admitted to enduring "bleeding and chafing" for years, the "wonderful" doctor told her a surgical reduction was possible.
“Of course, it’s not covered by insurance because it’s considered cosmetic, which is very interesting," Shields observed. "The last time I did check, I did not want to be a porn star."
At the recommendation of her gynecologist, Shields went through with the procedure — but only truly understood what had been done when she followed up with the male surgeon for a post-operative check-up.
"He informed me that he threw in a little bonus,” Shields said, revealing that in addition to the reduction, the surgeon had also performed a rejuvenation, otherwise known as vaginal tightening.
The Blue Lagoon actress said the doctor was "legitimately proudly" as he explained that he "threw in a little twofer." Meanwhile, Shields was left "dumbfounded" by the revelation.
She added, "It felt like such an invasion — such a bizarre, like, rape of some kind."

Shields maintains that she didn't want, or even feel that she needed the "irreversible" procedure. "Nothing pointed toward this need to be tighter or smaller or firmer or younger, especially there,” Shields said, noting that both she and her gynecologist were outraged.
In the aftermath, she found herself battling feelings of "shame" and "anger," and avoided discussing the situation — even with her husband, Chris Henchy.

Shields unpacks the incident further in her upcoming memoir, recalling her "horrified" reaction to the doctor, who acted as though he'd done her a "favor," but adding that she decided against suing him because "I didn't particularly want talk of my lady parts once again on the front page of every paper."
As for the results of the surgery, Shields writes that she "definitely noticed a difference in my body, and not a good one."
Before delving into the story, Shields offers an apology of sorts to her readers. In it, she warns those who might consider the anecdote "too graphic" but explains that she thought it a necessity to discuss.
"I’d be lying if I said I’m not embarrassed to share this very intimate information," Shields writes in the book. "But, if we are to change the way we approach and talk about women’s health, then we need to bring up the uncomfortable but very real issues. Shame is no longer an option."
The book sees Shields discussing the scrutiny she faces as a “woman of a certain age," and explaining why, at 59, she feels more comfortable in her skin than ever. Brooke Shields Is Not Allowed to Get Old hits shelves on Jan. 14.
