Brooke Shields Responds to John Mulaney's 'SNL' Send Up of Her Iconic Ad Campaign

Saturday Night Live brought a unique idea to the small screen for one of the official host photos taken for the most recent episode that aired on Saturday, Nov. 2.

SNL alum John Mulaney hosted the sketch comedy show for his sixth time on Saturday. As fans saw while watching the episode, one of his host photos showed the comedian recreating an iconic Calvin Klein ad from 1980 that starred Brooke Shields.

In the original photo, Shields, now 59, wore a burgundy shirt that billowed around her body as she kept it buttoned across her chest. She was photographed with the shirt parted open, revealing her midsection while she leaned back on her hands and struck a pose with her legs. One leg was bent at the knee and the other stretched straight out in front of her, showing off the dark-wash Calvin Klein jeans that the ad was meant to showcase as Shields pointed the toe of one booted foot.

For his recreation, Mulaney wore a dark red shirt and dark-wash jeans, though he didn’t leave the shirt open to show any skin. He too wore black boots, as Shields did in her original ad more than 40 years ago, and arranged his legs in a similar pose for his official Saturday Night Live host photo.

Shields responded to the joke with a post on Instagram on Sunday, Nov. 3, in which she shared a screenshot of Mulaney’s photo beneath her original ad. “I see no difference… I guess they can be your Calvins too, @johnmulaney👖🤣,” Shields wrote before also tagging the official Instagram accounts for Saturday Night Live and Calvin Klein in her caption.

Several fans who commented on Shields’ post praised Mulaney's recreation, with some reminiscing over the “Legendary” and “Iconic! 👏❤️” original ad.

“I absolutely LOVE this! I didn't know that was what he was trying to do/copy but I love it,” one fan wrote.

Others offered critiques of Mulaney’s send-up, with one pointing out, “He didn't show his abs like you did! Do it over! Lol.”

“John didn’t point his toe - minus three points on style,” one fan observed.

“This is amazing but u need to school him on the toe point 🩰😘🔥,” another fan agreed.

“His heels are higher than yours were 😂,” one Instagram user noted.

“Actually you do it better,” another Instagram user declared.
