Brooke Shields’ Daughters React to Mom Being Kissed at 11 by “Pretty Baby” Costar, 29: ‘That’s Weird’ (Exclusive)

"I don't like this movie," Shields' daughter Grier says of 'Pretty Baby,' the film in which her mom, then 11, kissed a costar more than twice her age

It’s perhaps their mom’s most famous — and controversial film, and if you ask Brooke Shields’ daughters Rowan and Grier about Pretty Baby, her 1978 movie in which she played a child prostitute when she was 11 years old, they have definite opinions.

“I don’t like this movie,” says Grier, 18. “I’ve seen enough of it on TikTok. I would prefer not to watch my mom being sold, as an 11-year-old prostitute. I’d rather watch the funny and happy ones.”

When it comes to the scene where Brooke was kissed by her older costar, Keith Carradine, who was 27 at the time, Grier says, “That’s weird. She had to kiss someone [over] twice her age." Adds Rowan, 21, “Your stage kiss does not count as a real kiss.”

That’s exactly what Carradine told Brooke before they filmed the scene, a story she recounted in her documentary, also named Pretty Baby, which came out last year. “He told me it doesn’t count [as a first kiss] which was very sweet,” she says now. “He was probably struggling too.”

Just ahead of becoming an empty nester this month, with both Rowan and Grier off to college, the star, 59, and her daughters shared stories about family life, mom’s career and more — as well as a few inside jokes — in this week’s cover story for PEOPLE.

As Rowan explains, “It’s more like it never really crossed my mind to say, ‘Movie night, let’s watch Pretty Baby.’ I’m either watching Love Island or a new movie, like Minions or Despicable Me. It’s not like I’m purposefully avoiding watching my mother. I loved Mother of the Bride and Castle for Christmas,” she adds, referring to her mom’s hit Netflix romantic comedies of recent years.

Brooke Shields and her daughters Rowan and Grier shot at home in Southampton, NY on July 21, 2024.

Her daughters' opinions have led to some interesting conversations. Of Pretty Baby, Brooke says, “You know what the craziest thing is, this is the best movie I’ve ever been in. Directed by Louis Malle. The most beautiful cinematically….”

Still, listening and learning from her daughters has led her to see things in a new way. “The conversations are so different now, “ says the star and CEO of Commence, a new hair care line for women over 40. “It’s a weak argument to say to very aware women, ‘That’s the way it was then.’ It was a norm but that’s not an argument. Nothing I did then, you could get away with doing now.”

Her girls love when their mom's quirky humor is on full display. “I love when my mom does comedy,” says Rowan. "The Friends episode is when she was doing peak comedy,” says Rowan of her mom’s famous turn as the girlfriend who devoured Joey’s fingers. “Basically I peaked in the 90s, according to her,” quips Brooke.
