Brittany Cartwright is sharing an update on where she stands with her ex Jax Taylor amid their separation.

On the May 24 episode of her When Reality Hits with Jax and Brittany podcast, the Valley star, 35, told guest Tom Schwartz that she and Taylor, 44, are “not great” right now.

“Right now, I can't even be in the same room with him very long,” she shared. “Last time you were here, I was fine…You were like, I forget you guys are even separated. So it's very up and down like that.”

When Schwartz, 41, suggested the former couple do a “good job” of respecting each other’s boundaries, she noted that her estranged husband “hasn't done a good job respecting mine, that's for sure.”

“But we gotta remember, I'm the one that's living elsewhere and…I feel like I'm the one that's taking all of the hard hits even though I was the one that had to leave,” she explained.

Cartwright announced the news of their separation after four years of marriage on an episode of their joint podcast, When Reality Hits, in February.

“Jax and I are taking time apart and I made the decision to move into another home to take some space for the sake of my mental health,” she said at the time.

Cartwright told PEOPLE at the premiere of their Bravo show, The Valley, the following month that she “really needed to step back from” the relationship.

"Once a woman hits her breaking point, it's like 'Done.' Something like clicked in my head, and I was like. 'I need to step away from this situation. This is not not healthy. This is not a good situation. My son deserves better. I deserve better,'" she said.

She also noted that the pair’s three-year-old son, Cruz, is the “most important thing” to them both as they navigate their time apart.

"I feel a little bit of relief," Cartwright admitted. "I needed this space."

Taylor similarly remarked on how the separation was “best for [their] family” as he and Cartwright have "been going through some things for a while now."

"We decided to take a little bit of a breather. I'm not sure what the future holds for this. But as of right now, this is just the best-case scenario, but this is not a publicity stunt," he shared.

Despite the challenges in their relationship, Cartwright told PEOPLE in April that co-parenting has been going well thus far for the pair.

“I think it's honestly been better because we aren't fighting in front of him," she explained. "And for me, I think that's what is most important, right now. Because that's why I had to get him out of that situation in the first place."
