Bride Furious After Groom's High School Ex Attends Wedding, Accuses Woman of Trying 'to Steal' Her Husband
The former girlfriend revealed that the bride told her, "You shouldn't attend an ex's wedding unless you're still hung up on them, and ... I must be planning to steal her new husband away"
A woman is turning to the internet for help after she says she attended her high school ex-boyfriend’s wedding and started receiving negative messages from his new wife.
The 36-year-old woman explained in a post on the popular "Am I The A------?" subreddit that her ex, a 37-year-old man, invited her to his recent wedding alongside several other high school friends after she congratulated him on his recent engagement about a year ago.
She explained that she and her ex dated when they were 15-18 years old and amicably split up before attending college in different states. She said that since going to college, they have only been friends on “Facebook,” where they would “wish each other happy birthday” or “congratulate each other on big milestones.” But other than that, they “have had no other contact in the 20 or so years since then.”
However, a few months after she congratulated him on his engagement, she said he reached and messaged her saying he “wanted to have a bit of a high school get-together at his wedding” since it was being held in their hometown.
“He [said he] was inviting most of our mutual friend circle and he'd love for me to attend too,” she wrote. “I hadn't seen most of these friends in over a decade, and I thought the idea sounded fun so I accepted the invitation.”
She said she attended the nuptials with her husband over the past weekend and got to meet all of her “highschool friends and their partners.” She noted that she and her husband “had a great time,” but things went south shortly after.
“Sunday morning, I wake up to a slew of Facebook messages from my ex's new wife about my audacity to attend the wedding, and how out of all his former girlfriends, I was the only one who failed the test,” the woman wrote. “She said that CLEARLY you shouldn't attend an ex's wedding unless you're still hung up on them, and how I must be planning to steal her new husband away.”
The woman noted that she was “shocked” by the response and “apologized” as her reason for attending was to “see old friends.” However, the newlywed responded saying that “no sane woman, with good intentions, would ever think it was okay to attend their ex's wedding.”
“I again apologized if I was [unwelcome], and hoped my presence [had] not detracted from her day,” she said. “I then messaged my ex and apologized if I had misunderstood and hoped I hadn’t caused any issues.”
She said her ex-boyfriend replied by telling her his “invitation had been sincere” and “he was glad to see the old friend group.” However, his wife then sent the woman messages again “complaining about how I was trying to manipulate her new husband to make her look crazy.”
“I decided this was not a ship I wanted to sail on, took a screenshot of all her messages and my replies, sent them to the ex and said I was just going to go ahead and block them both so I couldn't be accused of inappropriate contact with anyone,” she said.
This prompted the sister of her ex-boyfriend’s wife to then message her saying she “poisoned” her ex “against his new wife” and she “should have kept the messages” to herself. The woman turned to the internet for help inquiring if she was in the wrong for attending the wedding or if she was being “gaslit” by the bride and her sister.
Several people in the comments sided with the bride as they noted that she was already married, so she was not attempting to steal the groom, and it had been 20 years since they had been together.

One person said, “There are ZERO hard and fast rules about this stuff... and it is ABSOLUTELY a 'her' problem. It has been almost TWENTY years since you dated this guy — she's just nuts.”
“If she was uncomfortable with any exes coming, she should’ve told her fiancé before the wedding,” another comment said. “You were there with your husband, so you had not even an appearance of anything inappropriate.”
Another Redditor said that people can be “friends with exes,” adding that they are “best friends with one of my exes and we hang out frequently. He's engaged and they have asked me to officiate their wedding.”
