Brenda Song Gushes Over Her 'Idol' Kat Dennings in “Shifting Gears” Preview — but Tim Allen Is Not Impressed (Exclusive)

Brenda Song can’t help but gush over Kat Dennings on Shifting Gears!
On the Wednesday, Jan. 15 episode of the new ABC comedy, Song, 36, reunites with her former Dollface costar Dennings, 38, and her character, Caitlin, isn’t quite ready to move on from the past.
“Matt (Tim Allen) joins Riley (Kat Dennings) at Carter’s high school open house, where he’s unsettled to learn about the “accommodations” made for his grandson’s anxiety,” an official description for the episode reads. “Meanwhile, Riley reconnects with Caitlin (Song), a former classmate, and sets her up with Gabriel (Seann William Scott).”
In PEOPLE’s exclusive preview of the upcoming episode, Caitlin can’t hold in her excitement when she sees Riley at the school open house.
“Oh, my God, you're Riley Parker,” she says. “Caitlin Baker! We went to high school together. You copied off me in geometry and algebra.”
“And chemistry,” Riley adds as it dawns on her who Caitlin is.
Matt then steps in to induce himself and Riley asks Caitlin, “So, do you have a kid here too?”
“Oh no, I'm the assistant principal here,” she responds. “Haven't met Mr. Right yet. I do have four frozen egg babies.”
“Hey, perfect for an omelet,” Matt responds, much to his daughter’s dismay.
“Mr. Parker, your daughter was like a legend here,” Caitlin gushes and Riley responds, “What? No! Stop. Say more.”
“No, for real, I mean you were so pretty and popular,” she tells Riley. “You were kind of my idol.”
However, Matt sees things a different way, saying, “You need a new idol. You know, Jesus is available.”
Shifting Gears follows Matt, a "stubborn, widowed owner of a classic car restoration shop" but when his estranged daughter Riley and her two kids move back into his home, "the real restoration begins," per the show's logline.
Allen, 71, recently opened up to Parade about working with Dennings and building their onscreen dynamic.
“She’s just cut for me. I swear, the conversations we’ve had on set anyway, different human beings. But we got into it right away, interrupting each other,” Allen shared of his working relationship with Dennings.
“The character, Riley, made some decisions early in her life because she was pissed at me,” Allen continued. “You do a lot of stuff because your parents keep saying, 'Don’t do this, don’t do that,' and you just do it because you’re sick of hearing, ‘Don’t do it.’ She goes, ‘Is getting into a relationship just because my dad’s pissed at the guy a good reason to get into a relationship?’ That’s so much what this is about. I said, ‘Bingo, we’ve got it.'”
