‘The Boys’ Creator Eric Kripke Reveals How Tilda Swinton Season 4 Cameo Happened

Fans of The Boys might recognize a very familiar voice on the latest season.

Creator and showrunner Eric Kripke explained how Tilda Swinton’s voice cameo as The Deep’s (Chace Crawford) octopus love interest Ambrosius came to be on season 4 of the Prime Video series.

“For Tilda, we didn’t know her — it was just that once we realized that Ambrosius was going to be a character this year, we in the writers’ room all said, ‘We need the classiest, Oscar-winningest, British actress we can get our hands on,'” he told Variety.

“And that’s a really short list. And Dame Judi Dench was unavailable,” Kripke joked.

To Swinton’s “everlasting credit,” Kripke said, “she didn’t know any of us, but she was like, ‘That sounds hilarious, I’m in,’ and she did it.

“She was in Scotland, I think, at the time, but came into a recording booth there, and I was in a booth in L.A. giving her some direction,’ he explained. “And just to hear the highest-caliber actor of her level reading the dumbest lines, it just makes me so happy. It’s really one of the best professional days of my life.”

Crawford also revealed his reaction to finding out Swinton was voicing his romantic opposite during an interview with CinemaBlend.

“When they said that Tilda Swinton was doing it, I just started crying laughing because she must have a great sense of humor to want to come and play with us in this insane scene and give life to Ambrosius, finally,” he recalled.

“And it makes the scene so much funnier and real,” added Crawford. “She’s got this real beautiful voice, and it’s just hilarious to me.”

Ambrosius previously appeared on the infamous season 3 episode ‘Herogasm’, which saw Crawford’s The Deep meeting and hooking up with the aquatic creature at a huge annual orgy for Supes before breaking her out of her aquarium prison.

The first three episodes of The Boys season 4 are now available to stream on Prime Video, with new episodes dropping on Thursdays.
