Billy Ray Cyrus Praises Daughters Miley and Noah Amid Estrangement Rumors
Billy Ray Cyrus posted a loving Instagram tribute to his daughters Wednesday despite rumors that he’s estranged from both of them.
The “Achy Breaky Heart” rock star captioned a side-by-side shot of Miley, 32, and Noah, 25 with: “Holy s**t. I seldom every swear in my post but this deserves one!”
He told his followers, “You are witnessing in real time what it feels like for a Dad who within less than one weeks time has had his a** kicked and his mind blown by not one... but two of his own daughters.”
The 63-year-old singer prompted questions about his wellbeing when he performed a disastrous set at President Donald Trump’s inauguration in January. Immediately after the performance, his adopted son Trace posted that he was “genuinely worried” about his dad and hinted that the family hadn’t seen each other for quite some time.
Cyrus did little to address it at the time, but his Wednesday post showered his daughters with love, saying: “I’m so damn proud of both of you. I’m actually crying as I write this.” His tearful post came only months after 36-year-old Trace wept while writing his own.
“As I write this with tears in my eyes I hope you realize this message only comes from a place of love and also fear that the world may lose you far too soon,” he said in the cryptic Jan. 22 post.
“The day you adopted me was the happiest day of my life,” he added, next to a photo of Cyrus and a teenage Trace onstage during a performance. “Sadly the man that I wanted so desperately to be just like I barely recognize now.”
Trace added that “me and the girls have been genuinely worried about you for years but you’ve pushed us all away.”
Cyrus’s inauguration set generated confusion when he began to sing without any music or backup vocals. The disheveled star grew insecure on stage and asked, “Check? Is anybody awake? Y’all want me to sing more or you want me to just get the hell off the stage?” He dismissed the issues in a later Instagram post and said he was just happy to get the chance to perform for Trump: “That’s called rock ‘n’ roll!!!”
His son didn’t believe his act. “You’re not healthy Dad & everyone is noticing it,” he wrote a day later.
He also referenced his younger sister, Noah, saying she “desperately has wanted you to be part of her life and you haven’t even been there for her. That’s your baby girl. She deserves better.”
The post didn’t address exactly what health issues Cyrus was facing, but Trace stirred some suspicion when he spoke about his experience getting sober.
“We haven’t talked in a while but I’m over a year and half clean from alcohol,” he said. “I don’t know what you’re struggling with exactly but I think I have a pretty good idea & I’d love to help you if you would open up and receive the help.”
The only time that Cyrus publicly acknowledged the allegations was when he posted a snippet of his 2009 “Somebody Said a Prayer” music video, which features a younger Trace. The vague caption read, “Praying for my family. For my children,” and advocated for “the start of healing... the past does not equal the future.”
Billy Ray Cyrus also shared another photo of Noah last month, but it’s unclear when he last saw the majority of his family. His Wednesday post celebrated the Monday announcement of Miley’s new album, Something Beautiful, and Noah’s new March 19 single “Don’t Put It All On Me,” which she wrote with her 30-year-old brother Braison Cyrus.
Noah seemed to address the family rift within the song’s heartfelt lyrics and in a press release about the ballad said: “I have always been the observer in our family. And Braison wrote about how I tend to carry the weight of that on my shoulders.”
Unlike most of the five kids Cyrus shares with his ex-wife Tish Cyrus-Purcell, Braison has largely been out of the family drama and surprised fans when he announced he was producing his dad’s upcoming album only two days after Trace’s damning post.
