How to take the hassle out of cleaning

Let's be honest, who really loves to clean? As part of our daily lives, we all have to so here's how you can make the chore at hand less tedious than it has to be.

1. Set a timer
Set a timer to 30 minutes for a basic daily house clean, and focus solely on the task at hand during this time. Having a deadline will help you stay on top of the job, and you will actually get more done in a short amount of time.

Play some music and fully dedicate yourself to the job; committing your time without negativity will create a shift in your brain to enable you to even possibly enjoy your chores.

2. Have the right tools
When it comes time to cleaning your windows, bathroom and kitchen, make sure you are equipped with the right tools.

Use products that won't leave streak marks on your surfaces and have tools at the ready that will allow you to reach those high surfaces that you wouldn't normally be able to reach.

A common mistake most people forget, is to always use gloves to prevent cleaning products touching and penetrating your skin.

3. Line your compost bin with newspaper
Minimize odors and make your food scraps easier to manage by lining the compost bin with newspaper. When you go to empty the bin simply tip all the contents, including the paper, into your outdoor compost collection and give the indoor bin a rinse with soapy water then leave it to air dry.

Empty your bin before it gets full, say every 2-3 days, to keep odors at bay, especially in warmer climates.

4. Prioritise
Don’t put pressure on yourself to have a perfectly clean house everyday, especially if you have children.

Prioritise necessary daily cleaning within your 30 minute deadline, and try to avoid your big weekly clean on weekends, allowing you to spend time with the family whilst avoiding the stress of picking up after the kids constantly.

Do your laundry over the weekend and leave the folding until your dedicated big cleaning day; Mondays are a good day so you start the week off fresh. Spring clean at the start of every season and recruit help; get the family involved and rotate their responsibilities each season, from window cleaning to the oven scrub and more regularly, the car.

5. Use a pillow case to dust ceiling fans
Ceiling fans are often avoided simply because they’re hard to reach and leave a dusty mess. It doesn’t have to be so hard!

Take an old pillowcase and cover it over the blades, one at a time, sliding the case back over the blade to remove the dust. The dust and dirt is caught inside the pillowcase instead of all over you and the room.
