Beacon, USA Gymnastics Team Therapy Dog, Returns Home After Hospitalization
Nearly a week after the canine was hospitalized with stiffness, labored breathing and a fever, his owner shared an Instagram update, writing 'Beacon is home!!'
Beacon, the golden retriever who provided support during the U.S. Gymnastics Olympic trials, has returned home after he was hospitalized last week.
The canine’s owner, Tracey Callahan Molnar, shared a positive update on Instagram on Monday, Sept. 9, writing, “Beacon is home!! he’s home!”
Six days earlier, Beacon was admitted to an emergency pet hospital with symptoms that included stiffness, labored breathing and a fever. X-rays showed that fluid in his chest cavity was at least partly responsible for the labored breathing.
Callahan Molnar wrote that the staff at TrueCare for Pets taught her how to drain excess fluid from Beacon’s chest cavity. She added that because of the medication he’s been given, Beacon is now producing far less fluid.
While Callahan Molnar is still waiting for a diagnosis, she said his condition is “trending in a good direction.”
“Beacon has some appetite, eating some of his meals on his own and me hand feeding him the rest,” she continued. “I'm happy to say, beacon ate his entire dinner on his own.”
Callahan Molnar went on to thank the “warriors and warrioresses” who’ve sent well wishes to Beacon.

“I wonder every day how i will ever be able to say thank you in a way that you all truly understand the depth of my gratitude,” she wrote. “There are so many messages that lift me up and make me feel encouraged.”
“Please continue to keep ‘the beaks,’ a.k.a. the goodest boy in your thoughts,” she requested.
The USA Gymnastics team shared a message for Beacon on Wednesday, Sept. 4, that linked to a GoFundMe page to help with his medical expenses and read, “We’re wishing Good Boy Beacon a speedy recovery!”
Beacon, a 4-year-old golden retriever, is USAG's first therapy dog. He received his own credentials for the trials in Minneapolis, which ran from June 27 to 30 ahead of the Paris Olympics. He holds the USAG team's "Goodest Boy" title.

Callahan Molnar, a former gymnast and coach, has had him since he was a puppy, according to ESPN.
Beacon was Callahan Molnar's service animal before she had him certified as a therapy dog through Pet Partners, per the outlet.
"Science shows petting a dog or even watching someone pet a dog, can lower blood pressure and anxiety, help increase the feel-good hormones serotonin and dopamine, and lower cortisol levels,” she told ESPN.
Callahan Molnar added, "Everyone wants to say hi, and he wants to say hi to them. It takes 20 minutes to get ... not very far.”
