Bane rages against artificial intelligence in “Harley Quinn” season 5 trailer

The raucous DC animated show is moving to Metropolis, which means Superman, which means… Brainiac.

If one thing is clear from the new trailer for Harley Quinn season 5, it's that fan-favorite supervillain Bane (James Adomian) is not happy about the rise of ChatGPT and its ilk.

"I will not be taken down by artificial intelligence!" the costumed muscleman shouts in the preview footage, before hurling a chair at flying laser robots.

Powerful robots aren't usually a feature of Gotham City, where Harley Quinn has been set until now. Batman and his rogues' gallery are more focused on hand-to-hand combat and gimmicks like laughing gas.

But that's the thing: In season 5, the show is moving to Metropolis. That means Superman, which also means one of the Man of Steel's greatest villains is coming into play, the artificial intelligence known as Brainiac. He's the one who sent the flying robots, and will probably be the big bad of the new season. Well, not if Bane has anything to say about it!

Some things are staying constant with the new season. Kaley Cuoco and Lake Bell still star as lovebirds Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy — in fact, their Metropolis move is meant to boost their relationship and give them a "fresh start."

It really does seem like a change, because this new setting suggests the show will abandon some of its cliffhangers from the end of season 4. Last year's episodes ended with Harley and Ivy deciding to form the Gotham City Sirens with Catwoman (Sanaa Lathan) and Barbara Gordon (Briana Cuoco), while Nightwing (Harvey Guillen) was resurrected by Talia al Ghul (Aline Elasmar) via Lazarus Pit following his accidental murder by Harley. It's unclear how those plot points might translate to the Metropolis setting, but you never know.

However, the season 5 trailer does signal that the show will follow up the cliffhanger of Harley Quinn's recent spinoff show Kite Man: Hell Yeah!, which ended with Brainiac's signature Skull Ship appearing in the skies over Earth. But speaking of adult animated shows based on DC superhero comics, it's important to note that Harley Quinn will not be following up on the ongoing Max animated series Creature Commandos. As James Gunn and Dean Lorey recently confirmed to Entertainment Weekly, Harley Quinn is separate from the new DC continuity being overseen by Gunn and Peter Safran. These characters will get to just continue their own little universe, as long as fans are interested.
