The Baby from “Bewitched” Is 60 Years Old — and So Is the Show! See Child Star Erin Murphy Then and Now

Bewitched is 60!

Actress Erin Murphy, the former child star who played young Tabitha Stephens — daughter of magical Samatha Stephens (Elizabeth Montgomery) and Darrin Stephens (Dick York) — on the beloved fantasy-comedy series, is celebrating the show's 60th anniversary. The original sitcom aired from 1964 to 1972.

"Want to feel old? Bewitched premiered 60 years ago today, September 17, 1964," she posted on X, adding, "AND little Tabitha (Me!) is 60 years old! ❤️."

Murphy celebrated her 60th birthday on June 17, exactly three months before the show's anniversary.

Speaking with PEOPLE in 1999, Murphy said she never watched the show as a child, because it aired after her bedtime. Filming the series also pulled back the curtain on the mystical moments viewers saw on TV.

“I knew the magic wasn’t real,” said Murphy. “People were on the rafters above us, holding fishing poles with wires.”

In addition to Bewitched, which aired from 1964 to 1972, Murphy appeared in more than 80 TV commercials (including a detergent ad with Ronald Reagan), often beating out peer rivals Helen Hunt and Jodie Foster at auditions.

When the series was canceled, the then-8-year-old returned to life as a normal California kid, choosing Girl Scouts camp over a role in The Waltons and joining the cheerleading squad instead of visiting Fantasy Island.

Murphy returned to acting in 2010, after raising her six children. Since then, she's appeared in a handful of roles, as well as serving as a TV host and even doing some reality TV, like Craft Lab and Groomer Has It.

In 1999, Murphy told PEOPLE she didn't regret her lengthy hiatus from acting, which allowed her to raise her kids herself — as her mom had done for Erin and her twin sister Diane, who shared the role of Tabitha for one season.

“Scripts are sent to me all the time,” she shared, “and I haven’t seen anything good enough to have me gone for 12 hours a day.”
