“Avatar: The Last Airbender” season 2 unearths its live-action Toph actor in new teaser

Filming on the second season of the Netflix series has already begun.

Netflix dug up some exciting Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2 news on Thursday for the streamer's Geeked Week fan event hosted in Atlanta: Miya Cech joins the cast as Toph, the beloved character from the Nickelodeon animated series and a highly anticipated addition to the live-action show.

The animated original introduced Toph Beifong as a blind Earthbender who could navigate the world around her by feeling the vibrations of the earth. Though she may have looked like a young girl from a wealthy family, she was secretly the most skilled Earthbender of her generation and went on to invent the skill of Metalbending.

Netflix also confirmed that season 2 has officially started filming, and Toph is a crucial character in the Avatar story to come, since Gordon Cormier's Aang needs someone who can teach him how to Earthbend properly. A teaser video offers a brief glimpse of the live-action character's feet gliding along the earth before slamming her foot into the ground to call up the element.

Cech now joins Cormier, Kiawentiio (Waterbender Katara), Ian Ousley (Katara's brother Sokka), Dallas Liu (banished Fire Nation prince, Zuko), Elizabeth Yu (Fire Nation princess, Azula), Daniel Dae Kim (Fire Lord Ozai), Paul Sun-Hyung Lee (Zuko's Uncle Iroh), and more.

After season 2 premiered in February, Netflix renewed the series for two more seasons in order to bring the adaptation to its proper conclusion — though Albert Kim, who spearheaded season 1, will not return to his leadership role for those final two seasons. Co-executive producers Christine Boylan and Jabbar Raisani now jointly serve as showrunners.

Kim previously told Entertainment Weekly there will be a time jump between seasons 1 and 2 to accommodate for the young actors aging in real time. A season finale post-credits scene also featured the mention of Sozin's Comet, a major plot point from the animated series.
