Austin Butler’s ‘Caught Stealing’ Gets August Release Date, ‘Insidious 6’ Delayed to 2026

Sony has given the Aug. 29 release date originally set for “Insidious 6” to Darren Aronofsky’s crime thriller “Caught Stealing,” starring Austin Butler. The next “Insidious” entry has been pushed nearly a year, to Aug. 21, 2026.

Based on the book series by Charlie Huston, who also wrote the film, the official logline for “Caught Stealing” reads, “Burned-out ex-baseball player Hank Thompson (Butler) unexpectedly finds himself embroiled in a dangerous struggle for survival amidst the criminal underbelly of 1990s New York City, forced to navigate a treacherous underworld he never imagined.” Other cast members include Bad Bunny, Action Bronson, Vincent D’Onofrio, Zoë Kravitz, Liev Schreiber, Griffin Dunne, Matt Smith and Regina King.

The Aronofsky-Butler collaboration was first unveiled in March 2024. Upon the film’s announcement, the Oscar-nominated director told Variety that he was “excited to be teaming up with my old friends at Sony Pictures to bring Charlie’s adrenaline-soaked roller coaster ride to life. I can’t wait to start working with Austin and my family of NYC filmmakers.”

The untitled sixth installment in the “Insidious” franchise was confirmed to be in the works in May 2024. No further details were shared at the time. The latest “Insidious” film, “The Red Door,” saw series star Patrick Wilson return and also make his feature directorial debut. It was released July 7, 2023 and grossed $189 million worldwide against a $16 million budget.

In the release moves, Sony also announced that an untitled Marvel film, originally set for a June 27 premiere, has been removed from the release calendar. The decision comes after their “Spider-Man” spinoff “Kraven the Hunter” bombed over the holiday season, grossing $61 million worldwide against a budget north of $110 million.
