I Asked Food Pros for the Best Store-Bought White Bread—They All Said the Same Thing
According to the parents I spoke to, this bread is sturdy, nutritious, easy to find, and tastes great.
For parents, back-to-school often means back to packing school lunches. I am no exception. My two kids rotate through a handful of lunch favorites, including turkey and cheese sandwiches.
For years, I’ve been packing these sandwiches on store-bought bread. Yes, we love bakery bread, and I occasionally bake us a sourdough boule, but when it comes to making lunches that are consistent for my kids, I always reach for the same pre-sliced white bread.
Recently, I wondered if I was really getting the best loaf for the job. Is the bread I choose the least likely to get squishy in lunch boxes, while also occasionally making really good buttered toast? When I reached out to fellow parents to ask about their favorite store-bought white bread, I was delighted to learn that their top loaf was the same as mine. Here’s why.
The Best Store-Bought White Bread, According to Parents
When it comes to selecting the best white loaf you can find in most grocery stores, the parents I asked all agreed: The bread should be sturdy enough to stay firm in a lunch box but toast up well for breakfasts and snacks. While a few parents noted that other brands might be softer, none held up to topping and packing as well as Dave’s Killer Bread’s White Bread Done Right.
“It’s my go-to white bread for my kids’ sandwiches, grilled cheese, and more,” declared Simply Recipe contributor Molly Adams.
I’m with Molly. In my turkey and cheese sandwiches, as well as for homemade Uncrustables, it withstands jostling in packed lunches. It is even sturdy enough the loads of avocado that my pre-teen daughter piles on for avocado toast, now that she’s preparing meals for herself.
I first bought Dave’s Killer Bread White Bread Done Right 10 years ago when my daughter was just a toddler, and I was seeking a bread that would appeal to her while providing a decent amount of fiber.
Many parents mentioned that they, too, feel good about the ingredients in Dave’s Killer Bread. “I appreciate that the breads are pretty junk-free and taste good!” raves lifestyle writer Lia Picard. Though she’s a fan of Dave’s thin-sliced Good Seed, Picard builds sandwiches for her husband and daughter on the White Done Right, as that’s their favorite Dave’s.
While the parents I spoke with often buy sourdough and country loaves for sandwiches eaten at home, they all value having healthy, appealing bread that they grab at the grocery store for making sandwiches that won’t fall apart for lunches on the go. Dave’s Killer Bread White Bread Done Right just makes parenting life easier.
