Ariana Grande may be an Oscar nominee for Wicked, but fans may have missed how she called out the movie that truly started it all.
The singer and actress was on hand to open the 2025 Oscars on March 2, and she paid homage to The Wizard of Oz with a soulful rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." Wearing a stunning sleeveless gown for the performance, folks couldn't stop staring at how gorgeous she looked for her cover of the iconic song. But in true Ariana fashion, she couldn't just wear a red dress and call it a day! She had to add a subtle detail to the overall look — and it's something fans likely didn't pick up on until the very end of the entire moment.
As she and Cynthia Erivo (who's nominated for Best Actress in Wicked) came together onstage to sing "Defying Gravity," folks realized that the back of Ariana's dress had something extremely peculiar. It featured the heel of a stiletto sticking out the back of her gown — making the entire ensemble part of a giant red ruby slipper. It was the perfect nod to The Wizard of Oz, and it was so tasteful that it was only noticeable when pointed out.
