Anya Taylor-Joy Says Her Secret Elopement with Musician Malcolm McRae in April 2022 'Was for Us'
The actress and McRae had a second wedding with their family and friends in Venice in 2023
Anya Taylor-Joy is revealing new details about her secret Las Vegas wedding!
In her recent cover story for Variety, The Queen's Gambit actress, 28, shared more about her secret elopement to musician Malcolm McRae, 30, on April Fools’ Day in 2022 in New Orleans.
“We took our two best friends,” the actress told the outlet about the day. “It was magical.” She added, "We were together not very long … When you know, you know."
“It was for us," she explained of the elopement. "It was romantic."
Taylor-Joy also disclosed to Variety that she and McRae's family weren't present for their elopement. She said, "Malcolm FaceTimed his family from the church. We were like, ‘Hiii!’ "
"They knew — we were engaged for a little while. We got engaged while I was shooting The Menu. We kept it a secret from our friends until some newspaper blew it up.”

Despite eloping, in October 2023, the couple also held a 150-person ceremony at the historic Palazzo Pisani Moretta in Venice. Among the celebrity guests who attended the wedding were Cara Delevingne, Evan Ross, Miles Teller, Nicholas Hoult and Julia Garner.
In photos obtained by the Daily Mail at the time, Taylor-Joy could be seen standing on a balcony at the venue wearing a custom Dior gown.
To cap off the weekend-long affair, a source told PEOPLE that Taylor-Joy and McRae enjoyed a terrace brunch on Sunday at the St. Regis hotel, with sweeping views of the Grand Canal.
On April 2, McRae shared a post on Instagram marking the couple's two year anniversary. The post included a video of Taylor-Joy and McRae sharing a kiss, along with a photo of the couple with their friends.
"I love you now and somehow I always have and somehow it will never end. Happy two year anniversary (yesterday), beautiful," the musician captioned the post.
The same day, Taylor-Joy also took to her social media to share picture from the couple's secret nuptials in 2022. The photo montage featured images of the actress in her wedding dress and a closeup of their unique cake.
"Two years ago, on April Fools, I secretly married my best friend in New Orleans. The magic of that day is ingrained in every cell of my being, forever," she wrote. "Happy second ( first ) anniversary my love…you’re the coolest🫀."
"N.B yes, those are anatomically correct heart cakes. Yes, I am the vampire Lestat," she added.
