Anna Wintour Addresses Misconceptions About Her Persona — Including “Those” Miranda Priestly Comparisons
The ‘Vogue’ editor-in-chief also hopes others aren't "frightened" by her
Anna Wintour has addressed misconceptions about her persona.
The famed fashion journalist and Vogue editor-in-chief, 75, spoke with BBC about the new VOGUE: Inventing the Runway exhibit in London and addressed some of the misunderstandings surrounding her public image.
“I don’t really think about it," she said in the Dec. 3 interview on leaning into her signature look. “What I’m really interested in is the creative aspect of my job."
In addition to her fashionable attributes, including her synonymous blonde bob and sunglasses (a “prop” she uses to help her “be seen and not be seen"), Wintour is known for her demeanor, which has been compared to the icy, unimpressionable and powerful magazine editor Miranda Priestly, played by Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada.
At the West End gala opening for the musical adaption of the 2006 rom-com, which is based on Lauren Weisberger's 2003 book, Wintour addressed the typecast, saying it's "for the audience and for the people I work with to decide if there are any similarities between me and Miranda Priestly.”

She also dismissed the notion that, with her high-profile standing in the fashion industry, she never hears the word “no." In fact, that rumor couldn’t be further from the truth.
“That is absolutely untrue. They often say no, but that’s a good thing. No is a wonderful word,” said Wintour.
And when asked if she thinks others fear her presence, she replied, “I hope not.”

Wintour has run Vogue since 1988, later becoming the chief content officer for Condé Nast, the magazine’s parent publisher, and the global editorial director of Vogue in 2020. She’s also maintained her position as one of the Met Gala’s main co-chair members since 1995. But even with decades of work under her belt, she doesn't see retirement in her near future. “I have no plans to leave my job,” she told BBC.
