Method dressing may be a tired trend—but not the way Angelina Jolie is doing it.

The actor has been busy promoting her upcoming film, Maria, an atmospheric biopic by Pablo Larraín that follows the final week of famed opera diva Maria Callas. She made two outings in New York this week and wore two all-black chic ensembles for both occasions.

On Tuesday, Jolie was photographed out on the Upper East Side of New York City wearing a black plisse goddess dress with a sash waist and a flowing maxi skirt. She wore her hair in a glamorous half-up, half-down style and accessorized with a pair of statement earrings. She also threw on an elegant embroidered kimono-style jacket in black velvet that gave the look a "night at the opera" feel.

The following day, Jolie wore another striking black look. While attending a screening of Maria at The Paris Theatre, the star wore a glamorous long black coat dress with a fitted waist and a full skirt, which she paired with classic black pumps. She wore her hair down and swept back from her forehead and accessorized with a simple gold necklace.

With both simple, classic black looks, Jolie made the case for a more understated approach to the method dressing trend. Rather than channeling her character with over-the-top opulence, Jolie has instead been making more subtle sartorial hints at the world of opera.

Jolie has been tipped as a favorite for an Oscar-nomination for her performance in the film. As Jolie recently told People during the 2024 AFI Film Festival in Los Angeles, she found that she and Callas shared some unexpected common ground.

"I know there are certain things that people would assume from the distance that we have in common, but I think what we have in common maybe is that we share a certain loneliness in kind of sometimes doing our work where we're the one, I don't know, up at night, alone, trying to figure something out," she said. "I don't want to speak too much about it because it's too personal, but there's definitely a loneliness and a work ethic. I may be many things, but I'm a very hard worker, right?"
