Who Is Andrew Scott Dating? A Deep Dive Into the Irish Hunk’s Romantic Life

Across stage and screen, Irish-born star Andrew Scott has been steadily on the incline for the past decade. He's perhaps best known for his  popular TV roles like James Moriarty in the BBC series Sherlock, “Hot Priest” in the Prime Video dramedy Fleabag, and a terrifying Tom Ripley in the Netflix thriller Ripley. However, in recent years he's also delivered memorable big-screen performances in films like Spectre, 1917 and All of Us Strangers, for which he earned a Golden Globes nomination. He's quickly becoming one of the most reliably excellent actors of his generation.

And it seems like the Dublin-born lad will be just as booked and busy in 2025, with upcoming projects like the Richard Linklater-director Lorenz Hart biopic Blue Moon, the Knives Out sequel Wake Up Dead Man, the World War II historical drama Pressure and, most imminent, the spy comedy Back in Action. The latter—which was released by Netflix on Friday, Jan. 17—sees Scott act alongside Jamie Fox, Glenn Close, Kyle Chandler and, Cameron Diaz, who came out of acting retirement for the title.

But while Andrew Scott will no doubt be getting chummy on red carpets with those A-list co-stars to promote his new film, who is he cuddling up to when he’s not on duty? Intrigue over the high-profile actor’s relationship status is understandable, so here is everything we know and who Andrew Scott is currently dating, as well as his past romantic history.

Who is Andrew Scott currently dating?

At the moment, Scott is not publicly canoodling with anyone in particular. However, the Vanya actor has previously been quite private about his personal life, so even if he was seeing someone on the regular, it’s doubtful he would broadcast that relationship status.

Who is Andrew Scott’s ex Stephen Beresford?

Previously, Scott was reportedly in a decade-long relationship with English actor-turned-writer Stephen Beresford. The fifty-something Brit is best known for writing the play The Last of the Haussmans, which was produced by the National Theatre in 2012. Beresford also wrote the 2014 historical comedy Pride, which won the Queer Palm award at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival and starred Scott along with George MacKay, Dominic West, Imelda Staunton and Bill Nighy.

Scott sweetly praised Beresford’s script in the pages of Attitude magazine: “From reading the script. I knew it was going to be really, really special. And I knew it was going to attract good actors to play those parts, because it’s really hard to find a film that’s entertaining, hilarious and moving, and the fact that it’s a true story is unbelievable.”

It’s unclear exactly when the duo split up, though Scott seemingly discussed the breakup in a January 2020 appearance on the How to Fail podcast with Elizabeth Day. “You learn from people. It’s not about the length of time you spend with somebody,” Andrew explained. “My life is different now. I feel like my attitude towards relationships and my attitude towards myself and sexuality and all that stuff has changed, and that came about from having the courage to be on my own for a bit, quite a scary thing to do.”

However, it seems like the pair are still friendly, as they were last snapped together by Daily Mail paparazzi in January 2022 while vacationing in Venice, Italy.

When did Andrew Scott come out as gay?

While promoting the BBC Two drama Legacy, Andrew first commented publicly on his sexuality during an interview with The Independent in November 2013. “Mercifully, these days people don't see being gay as a character flaw. But nor is it a virtue, like kindness. Or a talent, like playing the banjo. It's just a fact,” the actor told the outlet. “Of course, it's part of my make-up, but I don't want to trade on it. I am a private person; I think that's important if you're an actor. But there's a difference between privacy and secrecy, and I'm not a secretive person. Really I just want to get on with my job, which is to pretend to be lots of different people. Simple as that.”

Though Scott later revealed to Attitude that his own personal “coming out” was a “really lovely” experience (per BuzzFeed), he did give insights into what it was like being cast in queer roles during his early teen years while he still closeted, telling The New York Times in December 2023: “When I was 18 or 19, I was playing gay parts but I wasn’t out. A lot of people within the industry were queer, so I was surrounded by them and then, bit by bit, started to feel confident. To make something like [“All of Us Strangers”], it moves me, because I never thought that I’d get a chance to expose myself so much in a film like this or for it to be in such a trusting environment with such brilliant colleagues.”

Did Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal date?

Speaking of those brilliant colleagues, Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal got hearts pumping and eyes tearing with their swoon-worthy performances in the Andrew Haigh-directed romantic fantasy All of Us Strangers. Yet despite Mescal saying he fell “in love with Andrew as a human being” during filming the intimate drama, there’s no romance between the two Irishmen off-screen. Instead, the two acclaimed actors have maintained their close friendship ever since the movie wrapped, with the duo recently going viral for their red-carpet reunion at Mescal’s Gladiator 2 premiere this past November.

In April 2024, Scott spoke to The Sunday Times about his friendship with Mescal, who supported the former through the loss of his mother last year: “I adore Paul. Obviously it’s been a tough time recently and he just continues to be a wonderful friend. It’s everything. The more I work in the industry, I realize, you make some stuff that people love and you make some stuff that people don’t like, and all really that you are left with is the relationships that you make. I love him dearly.”

Has Andrew Scott dated Jonathan Bailey?

No, despite being two of the most in-demand and thirsted-after queer actors in Hollywood, Andrew Scott and Jonathan Bailey (Wicked, Bridgerton) have never dated. However, the two stars have been longtime friends IRL, with Bailey revealing in a Vogue interview that Andrew calls him “J-Bads.” “There’s a big wonderful tribe of friends in London to which we both belong,” Scott added. “As well as being the most charismatic and gifted performer, he’s always struck me as someone who adores and prioritizes his friends and family and loved ones. That counts for so much in my book. It’s so wonderful to watch Jonny soar.”

Speaking of friend groups, the pair nearly broke the Internet when they posed for a photo alongside two of their fellow famous pals: Scott’s All of Us Strangers co-star Paul Mescal and Bailey’s Fellow Travelers scene partner Matt Bomer. Scott says that he and Bailey have plans to eventually act together themselves. “The search for us to be in the right thing together is on,” Scott told Vogue, jokingly adding: “Bert and Ernie the movie is the frontrunner, it just depends on who’s willing to shave off their eyebrows.”
