Variety will also honor actor Sarah Hyland with the first-ever Variety Courage Award, presented by Purina, which celebrates the entrepreneur and proud dog mom for her outspoken advocacy for survivors of domestic violence. The award builds on Purina’s Purple Leash Program, an innovative initiative with the nonprofit RedRover, that provides resources and support to help domestic violence shelters across the U.S. become pet-friendly, so that survivors with pets can escape abuse and heal together. Currently, fewer than 20% of domestic violence shelters in the U.S. allow pets, but Purina and RedRover are on a mission to change that and have given more than 50 grants to help increase the number of pet-friendly shelters so that no survivor has to choose between their own safety and the safety of their pet.

The event will be hosted by Emmy-nominated actor and comedian Leslie Jones, who recently voiced a role in Marvel’s “Hit-Monkey” for Hulu.
