Nicole Kidman has commented on the increase in movies centered on romantic relationships between older women and younger men.
As you may have seen, Nicole is promoting her new movie, A Family Affair, which will hit Netflix later this month. In the film, Nicole plays a single mom who winds up having an unexpected romance with her daughter’s younger movie star boss, played by Zac Efron.
If the plot sounds slightly familiar, that’s probably because A Family Affair isn’t the first big movie in the past year to focus on the unique dynamics of a relationship between an older woman and a younger man.
The Idea Of You, which came out last month, is similar to A Family Affair in that it tells the story of a 40-year-old single mom (Anne Hathaway) who finds herself in a relationship with a 24-year-old boyband member (Nicholas Galitzine).
May December is another recent film that centers on relationships between older women and younger men. Notably, this film is different in that it explores darker nuances of age-gap relationships, depicting the controversial marriage of a young man (Charles Melton) who was groomed by his older wife (Julianne Moore) as a teenager.
As you’ll know, these films were both major talking points online at the time of their respective releases. And now, with a new addition to the category of movies portraying women dating younger men, Nicole has weighed in on why the topic always creates so much conversation.
At Thursday night’s premiere for A Family Affair, Variety asked Nicole what the movie’s “message” is, prompting her to talk about how there historically haven’t “been enough stories” about age-gap relationships from women’s perspectives.
“It’s always been because [of] the nature of the world and the history of the way it’s been; it’s always been older men and younger women, and everyone’s like, ‘Oh my gosh,’” she said on the red carpet. “And I think needs to be kind of demystified.”
Noting that the script was written by Carrie Solomon, Nicole emphasized the importance of amplifying women’s work and their stories.
“Having a female write this, and now having more stories and all the work we’ve done for a decade just to get all the different stories out there, be they comedies, be they dramas… just with that perspective of women, without the judgment behind it,” she concluded.
