Airline slammed for 'crass' dig at Dr Jill Biden: 'Poor taste'

An airline has come under fire after a gag about Dr Jill Biden’s Inauguration Day outfit was slammed as being ‘in poor taste’ by Twitter users.

As President Joe Biden is sworn in as the 46th President of the United States in Washington today, eyes inevitably turn to the outfit choices of all involved as a historic way the incoming president and their partner can make a bold statement about the future presidency, without saying a word.

That’s just what Dr Jill Biden did today when she stepped out in a matching coat and dress in patriotic blue designed by US label Markarian, from designer Alexandra O'Neill who operates out of New York’s famous Garment District.

Across the pond, however, Irish airline Aer Lingus couldn’t help but notice a striking similarity between the incoming First Lady’s stunning blue ensemble, and their own blue stewardess’ outfits.

Taking to twitter, the airline shared a side by side image of an Aer Lingus air stewardess and Dr Biden cheekily asking: “Who wore it better?”

The joke went down like a lead balloon with online commentators who slammed what they described as a dig at the new First Lady.

“I would say that this post is unbelievably disrespectful especially from a company,” one user wrote under the photos.

“You had an opportunity to say something inspiring, you failed,” another noted. “Perhaps focus on the fact that Dr Biden is an educated and intelligent woman or note the pride most Irish people feel today. Very bad taste and frankly disappointing.”

Joe Biden is notably an Irish American with his great-great-grandfather and great-grandfather born in Ireland.

“Is this @AerLingus being bitchy or what?” another person wrote. “It’s in very bad taste!”

“Crass,” another described it.

Others saw the funny side of the post and called for those opposed to lighten up.

“I think Dr Biden also has a sense of humor,” one woman wrote.

“Both lovely but I think Jill wore it best,” another wrote.

Aer Lingus has been contacted for comment.

The controversy over the First Lady’s outfit comes after the top performer at the inauguration, Lady Gaga, also sparked a conversation with what she wore.

Lady Gaga belted out a rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner the inauguration ceremony, dressed in a stunning ballgown many have compared to an outfit from The Hunger Games.

Wearing a custom Schiaparelli Haute Couture billowing scarlet ballgown skirt and navy turtleneck, people online couldn’t help but noticed that the giant brooch attached to Gaga’s jacket looked very like the Mockingjay Pin Katniss Everdeen dons in The Hunger Games franchise.

“Proof that Lady Gaga is secretly a Capitol Citizen in Panem singing at the inauguration of President Alma Coin after President Snow was kicked out of office. The performance is available on Capitol TV,” one person joked online.

“Gaga looks like she’s about to announce the 74th annual Hunger Games,” another wrote.
