"We have to, because of work, spend a lot of time apart," Preston explained. "I think he and I, maybe more than some other couples who are together all the time, we really appreciate the time that we do have together."
The actress added that the distance "keeps things fresh" in her relationship with the Person of Interest actor, noting, "I do think there is something to the adage, 'Absence makes the heart grow fonder.' I really do think that is true."
She said the couple "try not to take for granted any time that we are given to be together," because they know there may be a "long stretch" of time before they're able to see each other again, and also give each other gifts to let each other know they care.
The actress once came home and found a "gorgeous bouquet of stargazers sitting on the table" from Emerson, who had gifted her the flowers after he knew she had been working "long hours." She noted, "it's little things like that" that keeps their relationship going.
Emmerson also surprised her with a “French toast” breakfast one morning as a romantic gesture. "That kind of thing is the kind of things that we like to do to surprise each other," she explained.
"It's the small gestures," she added. "We both have our romantic sides for sure."
