Video transcript

- Congratulations on the film, guys. I loved it.

DAN STEVENS: Thank you.

- There are some kind of a lot of gross things that happen in the film. Kathryn, in particular, that pool scene, that was the toughest thing for me to watch, I think, without giving away any spoilers.

KATHRYN NEWTON: Good. I hope so.

- What was it like to shoot it? Yeah.

KATHRYN NEWTON: It was not like what you thought. It was better, in a lot of ways. It was fun. I had on a wet suit and a lot of the jello got in it. There was some banana in there, a lot of hair, unfortunately. It was gross. But it was so fun. It was so much fun. I'll never do anything like it again.

And I knew reading the script, I didn't think it would be that difficult physically. I really didn't think. I'm an athlete. I'm like, you know, I think I'm so in shape. Put me in a pool of bodies, different story.

So I'm pretty grateful just to have gotten to play the role because I think it's a great scene that I don't want to watch ever.

- Absolutely.

KATHRYN NEWTON: But I'm glad that you were not able to look at it. That's what we're going for.

- It was disgusting, yeah. Truly. I was going to ask, as horror fans, do you relish in that idea of grossing people out? But it sounds like you do.

KATHRYN NEWTON: Yeah, you want to, right? If you're not grossing somebody out, I don't know if we're doing it right. It has to be a satisfying thing. And I hope it was satisfying.

DAN STEVENS: Yeah, I think these guys' radio silence, Matt and Tyler, they like to take things to extremes. And when I-- I love watching horror movies. And when I see a film that is pushing something to the limits that I've never seen before, it's pretty enjoyable. And this film has a lot of that going on.

- Was it all fun, or is there anything that was a bit difficult about making the film?

DAN STEVENS: Just the sticky blood everywhere.

KATHRYN NEWTON: Yeah.

DAN STEVENS: That's the hardest part. Just-- just sticking to everything.

KATHRYN NEWTON: Yeah, it is sticky and then it can hurt a little bit. But he's right. Like, when you have Matt and Tyler, everyone-- it wasn't difficult because we all wanted to do it. Like, they say jump, we're like, OK, how high? You want me to do that? All right, let's do it full out. And they are also very receptive to that. So you never feel like you're doing it for no reason. It's all coming back to you. And I feel like you can see it in the film. We all really had a good time.

- Dan, what was the best part about shooting for you?

DAN STEVENS: It was just such an interesting bunch of people thrown together, really, and getting to work with such a range of different kinds of actor. And so yeah, we were like the most unlikely group. But it was a lot of fun. And like I say, Matt and Tyler just really led the whole thing with such enthusiasm and humor that really kind of infused the film, I think.

- What's like a fun fact from behind the scenes that fans might not expect when they're watching the film?

DAN STEVENS: I'm going to say the stuff that they put in Kathryn's hair to make it look like body parts was actually mashed up banana.

- It's good to know that now, if rewatch it.

KATHRYN NEWTON: Yeah.

DAN STEVENS: It smelled weird.

KATHRYN NEWTON: If you see a bite that looks delectable, it's because it is edible. And also, shaving cream is how we get the blood off. That's what removes the stain.

DAN STEVENS: Top tip.

- Cool. Interesting. I was wondering if you guys had any favorite memories of working with Angus on the film.

KATHRYN NEWTON: Definitely.

DAN STEVENS: Yeah, Angus is very, very special. And we were very, very lucky to get to work with him. And he was so funny in this film. And yeah.

KATHRYN NEWTON: I think my favorite-- I don't know my favorite, but a very great part is the song that we're singing or jamming to was a song that Angus chose. And it's what we did go with in the final cut of the movie. And I love this song.
