8 Tips for getting your car summer ready

With the weather warming up, it’s time to start thinking about summer holidays. And nothing says Aussie summer like a road trip. But what’s the one thing you don’t want when you get going? Car troubles.

So make sure your car is road trip ready. Here are a few simple things to do to avoid roadside disasters and a hefty bill to boot.

  1. Check your lights – front, rear and brake – are working, as well as your indicators.

  2. Check your windscreen and mirrors are free from cracks and chips. If you spot any breaks, get them fixed before you go away. A small chip or crack can be easily repaired, but, if neglected, can lead to a major crack – which could mean the entire windscreen has to be replaced.

  3. Check all fluid levels, including oil, washer, coolant, power steering, brake and battery.

  4. Check your tyres. Look closely at the tyre pressure and make sure it’s holding, to ensure you don’t have any slow leaks. Also check the tread and wear. If any of your tyres need replacing or rotating, take care of them before you leave.

  5. In the warmer weather, it’s critical that your car’s cooling system is working properly. Leaks, incorrect or low coolant levels, or faulty cooling system components can quickly turn into even bigger problems.

  6. Check the hot and cold gauges on your air conditioning, and make sure you regularly replace the pollen filter. When the mercury is rising and you’ve got a car full of friends, the last thing you want is for your air-conditioning to stop working.

  7. Make sure your radio (and media player if you have one) is working. Sync up the Bluetooth before you go. Both speakers should be producing clear sound, so you can blast your favourite summer tunes.

  8. The best tip of all? Don’t wait until you’re about to leave! If you’re planning a trip, get organised and check your car at least a week (if not two) before you go, so, if anything major needs fixing, you have plenty of time. While it’s great to perform regular checks yourself, a professional service will make sure everything is in top condition, and save you money in the long run – not to mention the peace of mind.
