The 7 Best Watches of the Week, From Jason Bateman’s Rolex to Kevin Hart’s Audemars Piguet

It felt like every celebrity and their watch was at the Olympics this past week—Tom Cruise, Daniel Craig, and Spike Jonze were just a few of the A-listers in Paris—but some other big names have been sporting medal-worthy wrist candy Stateside, too.

Actor Jason Bateman casually flexed a vintage Rolex Daytona at a baseball game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Philadelphia Phillies, while soccer superstar Lionel Messi flaunted a sapphire-encrusted Patek Philippe at a League Cup match between Inter Miami CF and Toronto FC.

More from Robb Report

Heading from the stadiums to the red carpet, Brandon Skelnar and Justin Baldoni attended the It Ends With Us premiere in New York wearing watches by Cartier and TAG Heuer, respectively. Kevin Hart and Édgar Ramírez showed off pieces by Audemars Piguet and Cartier at an event for Borderlands in L.A. Tom Hopper was also spotted in a Breitling Navitimer at the premiere of the final season of The Umbrella Academy. Who needs the Olympics?

Below are the best watch flexes of the week.

Lionel Messi: Patek Philippe Nautilus

Lionel Messi, the unofficial poster boy for Patek Philippe, rocked another glorious Nautilus at a League Cup match between Inter Miami CF and Toronto FC. (You can see it more clearly on his Instagram.) The highly coveted platinum timepiece showcases 32 baguette sapphires on the bezel and another 12 baguette sapphires as hour markers on the dial. It is also set with a single tiny diamond between the lugs at six o’clock in classic Patek fashion. Patek is rumored to have released no more than half a dozen Ref. 5711-111P watches with white dials in the mid-2010s, after which it followed up with a version with a black dial and added the “-001” suffix. Messi’s is one of the latter examples, which will cost you upward of $500,000 on the secondary market.

Jason Bateman: Rolex Cosmograph Daytona

Jason Bateman: Rolex Cosmograph Daytona

Funnyman Jason Bateman wore a seriously cool vintage Rolex Daytona to a baseball game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday. “This is a 1979 Daytona,” he told British GQ in 2011. “It’s not a Newman. I need to dance a little bit faster to afford one of those! I traded a Rolex Sea Dweller, a Franck Muller and I wrote a check [to get it].” Housed in a 37.5 mm steel case, the chronograph (Ref. 6263) features a white “Panda” dial with black subdials, a black acrylic bezel, and a classic Oyster bracelet. Big red “Daytona” text typically appears either under “Cosmograph,” above the six o’clock subdial, or not at all on the standard dial variants. It appears Bateman’s piece falls into the latter category. You can expect to pay in the tens of thousands for a similar example.

Tom Hopper paired a chic, monochromatic look with a classic, all-black Breitling Navitimer for the premiere of the final season of The Umbrella Academy in L.A. on Monday evening. There have been many iterations of the iconic Navitimer since it debuted in the 1950s, but this 41 mm steel reference is replete with modern refinements. A flattened slide rule and a domed crystal give the feel of a sleeker profile while alternating polished and brushed metal elements create a gleaming finish. Other signature elements remain, such as baton indexes, the trio of chronograph counters, and the iconic AOPA wings at 12 o’clock. The watch will run you $9,450.

Kevin Hart: Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar

Kevin Hart rocked yet another royally rare Royal Oak at an event for Borderlands in L.A. on Tuesday. The watch-obsessed comedian, who has previously been spotted in a 50th Anniversary edition and a coveted flying tourbillon, busted out a Perpetual Calendar (Ref. 25820 BA) for the occasion. AP introduced the perpetual calendar complication to the Royal Oak collection in 1983, though this piece hails from the 2000s. The 39 mm octagonal case and integrated bracelet are crafted from 18-karat yellow gold, while the grande tappisserie dial is finished in a silver hue and topped with gold accents. The calendar complications (day, month, and date) sit at three, nine, and 12 o’clock, while the moon phase indicator can be found at six o’clock. You’ll need to pay six figures for this beauty, or you can check out some slightly more affordable options here.

Brandon Skelnar: Cartier Santos

Brandon Skelnar rocked a Cartier watch befitting of a leading man to the premiere of It Ends With Us premiere in N.Y.C. on Tuesday. The flashy Santos de Cartier features a 39.8 mm yellow-gold case, a silvered opaline dial with sword-shaped, blued-steel hands, a seven-sided crown set with a faceted sapphire, and a yellow-gold bracelet. The watch also comes with a second, alligator bracelet, but evidently, leading men prefer all gold. The piece costs $36,600.

Justin Baldoni: TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph

What watch does one pair with a baby-pink Todd Snyder ensemble? A TAG Heuer—if you’re Justin Baldoni, that is. The actor-director wore an understated Carrera chronograph with a rather eye-catching suit on the pink carpet at the It Ends With Us premiere in N.Y.C. last Tuesday. Released in 2020, this modern riff on the 1960s Carrera features a 42 mm steel case and a rose-gold accented dial that perfectly complements Baldoni’s Snyder. Two chronograph counters sit at three and nine o’clock, while a date window lies at six o’clock. Powered by the in-house Calibre Heuer 02, the watch offers a power reserve of 80 hours. It’ll set you back $6,250.

Édgar Ramírez: Cartier Santos

We’re big fans of the Cartier Santos Édgar Ramírez wore to a fan event for Borderlands in L.A. on Tuesday. Released at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie in 2018, the steel reference takes design cues from the original timepiece the Parisian jeweler created for aviator Santos Dumont in 1904 but has a few modern updates. Most notably, the watch features a larger, more curved 39.8 mm case and a slightly more sporty dial with a silvery-white finish and black Roman numerals. Hallmarks such as the crown set with a sapphire cabochon and the “rail track” remain. The watch was priced at a modest €6,600 (about $7,200) upon release, but could snapped up for even less on the secondary market.
