2. Munchkin

Breed Info:

  • Notable Characteristics: Unusually short legs due to a genetic mutation

  • Weight: 6-9 pounds

  • Life Expectancy: 12-15 years

Munchkin cats are remarkable for their stubby little legs (3 inches shorter than average, according to PetMD) and Weiner dog-esque builds, which are due to a unique genetic variation. Despite their little legs, these spunky little kitties are sociable, sweet, and active, though they can't jump quite as well as cats without their mutation.

It's worth noting the selective breeding of Munchkin cats is very controversial, as their mutations can leave them predisposed to certain health issues (according to Australia's RSPCA, this is a common problem among many cats bred to have exaggerated physical features). Many cat associations do not even recognize Munchkins as an official breed. It doesn't make these cats any less sweet, but it's definitely something to be mindful of!
